Subject: Question about crank compatibility
Hi. Excuse my ignorance, this is probably a very basic question. Will a 7800 Duraace crank or Ultegra 6700 crank (10spd drivetrain) work with a Tiagra 4500 cogset/chain (9spd drivetrain)? Thanks.

Good question.

While the DuraAce 7800 and Ultegra 6700 series is for 10 speed, I am using a Shimano R700 crank (it's the Ultegra 6600 level, but for high end flatbar bikes) with a 9 speed chain and 9 speed cassette. It works well. What you may notice in the inner chainring - small cog gearing (called cross gearing) the chain rubs against the outter chainring a little more than a full 10 speed drivetrain would.  Avoid using the cross gear combination and the sound will go away. The outer chain ring and a more central cog will provide a similar gear ratio.
