Subject: Tri Bikes for women Athletes

Hi,

I am looking to buy a Tri Bike, I'm 5ft 3" tall.  I have looked at numerous bikes and there seems to be not that many bikes for female Triathletes and mens bikes appear to come up big.  Can I get some views or advice please. Thanks.

There are "women's specific bikes" in the tri market. However, the only thing (usually) that differentiates them between the men's models is the paint scheme, maybe the saddle (like the Felt DA). Go get a fit and see what fits you then and go from there. Generally speaking, there are smaller sizes offered in the "women's" designs vs the "men's" designs...

Trek Speed Concept M WSD has the same exact geometry as the SC M
Cannondale Slice Women's M has the same exact geometry as the Slice "mens"
Felt DA "women's" has the same exact geometry as the "men's" DA

Hope this helps,
Kevin

I'm 5 5 and ride a 49.5 Q Roo with 650 wheels. I've been told by buddies numerous times that I'm riding a kids bike, but generally beat them so the joke only last long enough for me to remind them who's faster. I would have never picked the bike or set it up the way it's currently setup but what fits fits... Throw away all preconceived notions about what you think you should ride and let a pro get you on what fits.

You likely will need a 49 bike and many tri bikes will come in extra small but that is just a guess.

Men or women's doesn't matter if it fits you well. It is more a marketing gimmick for women's tri bikes....paint, and such.

As others have said get fit, figure out what bikes are available in your price range, and ride lots.

I'm 5'5.5" and ride 51 size bike.

Lots of people comment about on various posts about "the most important thing is the fit".  I get that totally.  What I dont get is how you can go about working out which is the right fit for you.  Mostly your LBS only sells one brand of bike (two at a pinch).  So how do you work it out without brassing off many LBS by wanting to try before you buy?  Or am I missing something?

Call around and ask every bike shop in your yellow pages if they do tri bike fittings. If they don't know what you're talking about, that's not the one to go to.

When you find one or three that do, they'll fit you with a universal bike like thing that gives all your measurements. With those measurements you get a bike whose frame is as close as possible to that without alteration.

Most of the tri stores around me sell four to six different brands of bike so they have a decent choice for all body types.

Ok, I'm bumping this to see if you selected a bike. I am 5'4" and also shopping. I went and got a fitting on my road bike and the fitter used those numbers to advise me on the tri bike options. Fwiw I'm a 47 felt or a specialized / QR xs. Any bigger and at the lowest setting the bars are the same level as the seat.

I agree totally that there aren't many bikes out there for those of us this height. I will follow that up by saying there are a lot of bike stores super happy to sell me a bike that's too big. In my market even if they exist they aren't necessarily in stock so I'm testing a size that isn't right. It's been a frustrating process actually.
