Has anyone upgraded from the 310XT to the 910XT? What are the major differences, and do you think it was worth the price?

The major difference is the swim metrics that the 910xt records.  Is it worth it?  Only you can decide that.  I have both.  I will probably sell my 310xt, but not in any hurry at this point.  If recording the swim metrics is not a big deal to you then save your pennies and go with the 310.

The biggest differences between the watches are the form factor, the 910 has a lower profile then the 310 physically, the swim function on the 910 is very much improved and provides a lot more useful swim data, and the 910 has a built in altimeter which provides much more accurate elevation change data.

I have a 310XT but am upgrading to a 910 this weekend not b/c I don't like my 310, but b/c my wife has stolen it!  She fell in love it with it after her 210 died.  Anyway, all the reviews I've read about the 910 have been net-positive.  If you haven't read his review, google DCRainmaker and 910xt and his blog will pop up.  I'm a big fan of his reviews - dude is a techie and super detailed.

Biggest difference is, it's not orange.

As stated, the swim functions are the biggest change.

Only worth upgrading for me because I sold my 310xt and used my REI dividend for most of the cost difference.

I've heard the battery life is longer on the 910xt too.

It is not meant to be.  20hrs for both.  But, large improvement over the 305.  Perhaps that is what you are thinking.

Honestly, the swim thing is cool, but for me with small wrists I just love how much more comfortable it is.  Worth the extra money?  Yeah, for me it is.

I want to upgrade but just can't quite justify it with a working 310XT.  It does 95%.  If I owned anything lower (not waterproof etc) or I was getting a first Garmin, no question, I would go for the 910 over the 310.

If it's not blazing orange, how will they know I am a triathlete?

I couldn't either.  I kept a lookout for a Finis Swimsense and snagged a used one when it popped up.  Very happy now - the swimsense doesn't do open water (no GPS), but then again the 310 and 910 are also pretty much useless in open water.  It is, however, excellent in a pool setting and really helps me in training.

I agree the 310's OWS swim function wasn't very accurate but I have done 3 OWS with the 910 and find it much more accurate and provides a lot of useful data such as strokes per min.

Absolutely not useless in open water. Maybe more useful for you in training for pool swims, but the 910 blew me away with the accuracy of the GPS data. It's got very useful information that comes with open water swims that will let you do some serious comparison on the differences between your pool swims and your open water swims. Kind of opens a door to analyzing training in a way that was difficult before. As far as which one to get, both have pros and cons. Do you want to spend the money on something that is currently the norm, but probably will be replaced soon, or more money on the new hotness with more capabilities but a few more bugs. I upgraded because I needed to replace my device on short notice. I'm very happy with the choice.

That was really my deal. I had a 305 and just could not justify NOT getting the 910 over the 310. And no I didn't like the orange. And yes the 910 is much more comfortable than the 305. And even the band is much more secure with the little lock domahickey on the strap loop. It woul dhave been a much harder decision if I had a 310 already.
