brigby1 - 2012-09-07 6:04 PM Why do the bike/run bibs have T-shirt size on them?

My guess is you get the shirt at finish; they check the bib, and hand you a shirt?

Staying at Green Valley Ranch, it is hard to eat right.  That and still being on East Coast time, I'm all messed up with meals.

Awesome. I could be 50 lbs heavier and still fit.

I thought that was a joke - were those two really in the olympics? Did someone just want to get their cousins on stage or something?

Well, that was quite challenging! I missed my time goal by 12 minutes, but I'm not disappointed with my race. I got almost 3900 ft of climbing on the bike and q bit over 1350 ft on the run - with the heat thrown in I'd say it was a very demanding course, and we'll worthy of a world championship.

I had a rotten day. Low energy coming in and something was definitely "off" today. Completely lost sense of direction on the swim. Started the bike fine, but soon had much lower power output than I had hoped for. Also had not 1, but 2 flats. That was me by the single file intersection inside the park (heading back out) and again on top of the hill outside, just before passing by the road down to the start. Had to carry the tubes in the old-fashioned figure 8 on the shoulders to the garbage spots each time too. Later things told me that dropping out after bike was a good decision too.

My Garmin is off (again). I had just under 3,300 ft. It did this at Quassy too. Several hundred ft less than anyone else. Better to underrate than overrate I guess? I actually didn't think the hills were bad at all. You just have to be in the mindset that they will keep on coming and accept it'll take a little longer to finish. The heat is a different matter.

Well done to everyone who finished! I saw a few of the pro women in the med tent and it did not look good. They really beat the heck out of themselves for this one.

Sorry to hear about your tire problems.  It seemed to happen a lot this week.

My 310xt had 2631 ft gain for the bike, both with and without elevation correction.  One problem I had with the Garmin Edge 500, at the beginning, including T1, it kept posting "Multiple Power Meters Detected", "Multiple Heart Rate Monitors Detected", etc.  Got to look into that.

A very hot day indeed, so much for the "dry" heat thing.  I picked up some arm cooling sleeves, I think they worked pretty well.  This was about the worst I've felt after a hot race, but not enough for the med tent.  I just spent some time in the food tent cooling down, and felt a lot better after about 30 minutes.

This past week, I lost count how many times we saw someone on the side of the road fixing a flat; I had one myself, over-inflating with a new pump that doesn't have a pressure gauge, I was going by feel.  This was in the hotel room, I think I had my clinchers up to about 140 or so.

About .1 miles into a local ride, and BOOM!.  Rear tube blows out near the valve.  One where the tire bead pulled out.  It was probably over 100 deg, plus the tire was probably warming up from the blacktop.

So I went with 105 psi this morning, (usually 110 psi, rider weight 157, 23-622 clincher tire)

That was one tough course, in tough conditions. I wasn't expecting much, having done IMKY just 2 weeks before, but happy with the way things turned out.  Had no legs on the bike, but was able to get up and down the mountains.  Although, I lost 40 places or so, as I was humbled by all the fast bikers.  But on the run, I was able to pass 55 or so people running very slowly.  However, I was running (except at aid stations).  Run course was tough, too with the amphitheater heat and that one road going out before finish...seemed like the tar was burning through my shoes!!

Congrats to all that competed!

Interesting that the elevation numbers from different devices are so drastically different.  My 305 had the bike course at 3442 feet, and the run course at 712 feet of climbing.  According to Garmin Connect the bike course also had nearly 800 vertical feet between T1 and T2, which definitely contributed to some slower times.

Overall I agree that none of the hills were particularly challenging by themselves.  They weren't steep like the ones I encounter here, but they were long and they were non-stop.  There really wasn't a flat spot on the course except some of the area between Lake Las Vegas and the start of the climb to T2.

Brigby sorry to hear about your flats, I think I did see you out there.  Matter of fact I saw quite a few people stranded on the side of the road fixing bikes.  Must be all the sand and sharp rocks.

I enjoyed the bike course more than I thought I would.  The run course was a little less pleasant.  Overall, i'm happy with my performance.
