Hi,

I am planning on attending some of these Open Water Swimming that will happen near Charlotte as I want to get some experience before my First Tri.

http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/parkandrec/aquatics/pages/aq... been to one of those, any tips, or reviews on them, or anyone planning on going to those as well?

Manuel

I did a few of the YMCA swims last summer.  They're great.  It's the Lake Norman Triathlon course and you can swim as many loops as you want (I assume they would make you stop at some point).  Bring your bike, if you have time, as many people ride the race course after.  Get there early (about an hour early) if you want to be in the first wave of swimmers.  I've done several one2tri swim clinics at the MCAC, but not OWS, and they are good and beginner oriented.  I would assume the OWS clinic would be good as well.  I hope to get out there for some of the YMCA swims this year.

Thanks for the info! I will be there next week probably and I am thinking of doing the University City duathlon in 2 weeks.

What races are you planning to do this season?

I have signed up for Jetton Tri (my first) and see how it goes from there. I come from a running background, so all of this is new to me.

The Y Open water swims are great.  I will add to what goose said, in that you can swim until the last wave does their one lap.  So if you go on wave 4, you get one lap (assuming 4 waves).  If you go in Wave 3, you can get two laps. Wave 2, three laps, etc.

Wave 1 fills up EARLY with the fishies/HIM & IM training folks that want to get in 3-4 laps.

I believe (don't quote me on it) but for next weekends OWS, wetsuit is required.  I know other years the first one was wetsuit required but I don't see that note on the website this year.  Either way, you will want a wetsuit as it is 66 degrees in Lake Norman this morning.

They are well run with lots of life guards out there.  The cove is calm.  Well worth the $10 (if you are Y member).

If scheduling works out, I will be out there to get in 3 laps next weekend.

Oh now I know who you are...your damn Blue Ridge Relay messed up my plan to do Cedar point 70.3 (same weekend).  Now we are stuck with Augusta again!

Anyone else hit the Y for the swim this weekend?

I thought the weather and water was perfect for a wetsuit swim (although a good reminder to order a new set of tinted googles).  There was probably only 50-60 people for this one so the crowds were very minimal.  On my third lap, there was hardly anyone around and the easiest OWS I have ever done.  Make sure you guys get out there in two weeks when the water temps are still low enough to get the wetsuits out!

I was there this weekend, I only did one lap, I was wearing a red cap (third wave) since it was my first OWS. I think I was fast enough that I started with the redcaps and ended in front of the orange caps (second wave). I then headed over to Jetton to do a 20km bike ride. Next swim I will probably do two laps at least.

For my first OWS it felt pretty good.

Next time I am easy to spot I am the only Mexican in the crowd, and I think I drive one of the few cars with a Mexican license plate here!

Next time I will say hi if I see ya.  I am also easy to pick out: Mid 30's, short hair, thin build, black wetsuit!  Tongue out

I was going to hit the Lake Norman Y OWS this Saturday and try out my wetsuit for the first time. But with the hot temps this week, I am worried it will be too warm by Saturday. I found online that this morning the lake was 75.7. Do you think that it will still be close to this Saturday?

I will be there tomorrow I will take my wetsuit and trisuit/ tri shorts in case it is too warm. Afterwards I will probably go and do the Jetton Park Tri biking route, to practice for next week's sprint.

It was a great Swim this weekend! I think it was right on the limit between wetsuit legal. I still did the swim in my wetsuit.

Did anyone else went this weekend?

I did the Jetton Park Tri route bike leg ride afterwards. They say its a flat course, but it still felt very hilly for a newbie like me!

I was there too and I wore my wetsuit. I only did one lap and I felt very comfortable with the temps. Someone told me the water temp was around 80, but that must have been in the shallow parts I'm guessing.

I will try to do it a couple more times this summer.
