Yes, I live in Roanoke and have done this event for the past few years.  I like the venue - the bike is somewhat hilly, but no major climbing.

Have you done this race before?  Smith Mtn Lake is a nice spot for a tri.

I can't say that I know of any swims prior to the race.  I'd say to get there early and head out into the water prior to the race and try out the wetsuit for sure.  The first time in a wetsuit is really different - at least for me.  I'm sure you'll have a chance to swim around a little bit prior to the race. Also try to practice getting it off - that can be a little awkward.

I hope you enjoy the race - I love SML for triathlons.  Up until this year there was also an olympic there in September, but unfortunately that's been canceled.  I am looking for a race somewhere near me (VA, NC, WV etc.) to take it's place.

Did you enjoy the race?  The only thing that I don't like about this race is the amount of traffic on the bike course.  I think we got really lucky with the rain holding off!

I thought it was ok.  The fact that I haven't been swimming much so far this year really handicapped my time. 

The only traffic that I saw on 626 was the police cars. They got in my way on the way out and on the way back. 

All-in-all, it was fine.  I did it because a friend from roanoke was gonna do it, but he has been sick, and a friend from Charlotte was going to come up, he backed out; and another friend from Greensboro backed out last week. So instead of mini guys weekend, it was just me.

The RD's stories were nice.  I especially liked the human interest one about the helmet in that it gave us a reason to think about something we take for granted.
