Did you stop drinking when training for full IM? Or cut down? I guess it won't help the training

I drink so little it probably didn't make a difference...that said, if you are used to getting schnockered regularly, I'd advise against it.  A drink or 2 once or twice a week should not be a problem, but everybody's different.  See how it works for you while establishing or reinforcing your base before you get into your training plan.  Just my 2 cents, good luck!  Cheers.

I rarely drink so its never been a huge factor for me in my training. With that being said, sometimes after a long training session or race its nice to have a cold drink and relax a little. I would suggest just limiting your intake and do it in moderation and you should be fine.

I had to cut down my Friday/Saturday night drinking quite a bit. Mostly because I had to get up so early to train Saturday and Sunday mornings to avoid the heat.

That said, I tried hard to maintain a balance between the increased training volume and my social life. So I still went out with friends, but I'd only have 1 or 2 drinks instead of staying up till the wee hours drinking. I thought it was a good compromise.

I usually cut it way down during training, and completly the month leading up to my main event. Like a the previous poster stated, it comes down to usually having to get up early to train, so staying up late drinking is not really an option.

my compromise is to start drinking early in the day right after the morning training session so that I don't have to worry about staying up till the wee hours Laughing

The weirdest thing I noticed was my tolerance took a nose dive when I started doing IM training. Not sure why (friends theorized it was a faster metabolism). Either way, one glass of wine and I was OUT. Anyone else have that?

That said, my favorite post-long bike workout snack was an ice cold beer and some potato chips. I was ridiculously healthy the rest of the time -- to a fault almost (anyone notice how working out just makes you CRAVE healthier foods? I coulda been eating fries every day and not gained an ounce, but instead, I reached for some edamame) -- but that was one thing I wasn't giving up.

As others noted, mostly your late-night activities, which often involve drinking, will take a backseat, so that might limit your alcohol intake by default.

I still go out quite a bit at my age, should probably cut it down but doing both can be done although it can make for some groggy long training rides.   I try to time my binge nights so that they come well after training in the morning and before a rest day.  That way I can let my sore legs relax while I'm hungover on the couch watching baseball or football "recovering" all day.   As far as races it depends on the distance.  IM not really drinking that month and way less than normal during training, marathon not really drinking the 2 weeks prior and less during the training.  Anything shorter just don't get banged up the week prior.   Everybody's body is different and I trained mine to drink pretty well back in college but as long as you aren't compromising your liver's ability to store glycogen or dehydrating yourself you'll probably be fine.  If you want to qualify for Kona then you should probably lay off the sauce.

Yes. I think it's two fold though...I can't tolerate as much and I drink less often, so the lessened tolerance is further lessened. Post training brunch with 2-3 draft beers and I'm done for the day. And super happy.

Decreased tolerance is from lack Of use, a faster metabolism will get it the stuff out of you faster!

And tolerance or not, alcohol being a toxin still does all that toxic stuff!

I also read an article the other day because it's the liver's job to convert fat stores, if your hitting the sauce every now and again it will make it harder to get ride if that last bit of "skinny" fat they don't call it beer belly for nothing I suppose!

It is both.  A faster metabolism will do that, metabolize the alcohol faster, thus getting you drunk faster.

I'm not training for a IM distance race, but I have noticed the same thing.  I have cut down on my alcohol consumption drastically since I've started training.  I used to be able to slam down a 12 pack + go out to the bar (Hey I'm from Wisconsin, so this is our version of binge drinking).  Now not so much.
