Our sweet 8 year old Avery took a bad spill on her bike today. My husband was with her on a closed road but she looked back to check on her sister and lost control. When they got home she was very tired and started vomiting so we went straight to the hospital. Of course she was wearing her helmet but she has a concussion and some horrible road rash on her face, left arm and knee. I am worried about her face, it is bad. Hospital cleaned, neosporin and bandage but I'm wondering what else we can do for her.

So sorry to hear about your daughter's crash!  Tough weekend for the kiddos on bikes b/c my neighbor got 15 stitches in his knee after an incident involving a chain link fence.  Glad you recognized the severity and got her to the hospital.  Probably a good thing you didn't have to do the initial cleaningCry.

Anyway, my son took a tumble over his handlebars on a hilly, gravel road few weeks ago.  It did a number on his chest, elbows, and knees.  Neosporin and clean bandages helped him.  A friend suggested Antiseptic Healing Ointment made by Brave Soldier.  We were out of town and on the road so I wasn't able to get it.  You can order it online and some bike shops have it as well.  We used neosporin and there is no scarring.  We did sponge baths for a few days, ate lots of Popsicles, and watched movies.

Maybe follow up with your ped and see what he/she recommends.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Tegaderm or this stuff DuoDerm are best to prevent scars.

Given it is your daughter's face, I'd call her doctor, dermatologist or mabye a plastic surgeon.

Here is a good article to read and another article.

Hope she heals up quickly and feels okay the next few days.

I was treated with something called 1% Silvidine Cream, a rx topical used to treat burns-was a miracle drug to me at the time! I could finally lay on my back and wear clothes

I can't give you a name of any creams to use, but I know that avoiding sun is crucial to getting rid of the scarring completely.

Oh wow, that is horrible.  I have no advice better than what has already been given, but I wanted to chime in to wish your little girl a very speedy and successful recovery.

Thanks everyone. Our #1 concern was the concussion, yesterday was a long day with only sleep and vomiting. Today she is much better, breakfast stayed put and she is more herself. Now comes a different hard part no TV, computer, reading, playing outside or schoolwork. Looks like lots of coloring, board games, audio books and crafts this week to allow her sweet brain to heal..... I will call around to see what I can get my hands on today.

when I took my spill a few years back I buggered my ear among other things. The Dr. was worried since cartilage heals slower and so gave me a prescription of a penicillin type drug so that it could heal without anything infecting it. Worked great, the scabs were mostly gone in 7 days and 8 years later can only see it if under severe stress, ie. running hard in 100 degree heat. See if your Dr. would agree.

x 3 on this stuff.

I "borrowed " a wee tube of it from the ICU next to my unit when I had my bike wreck, on the advice of someone here. Road rash IS basically a burn and so it is best to treat it as such.

I had a large nasty patch of road rash on my thigh....it has healed with virtually NO scarring.

The trick is to NOT let it scab over . This is very important. Keep the ointment on it and keep it covered as best you can.

It actually takes longer to heal than if you let it dry up and scab over but the results are well worth it, especially considering it is on your daughters face.

Best of luck to her!

I had a

+1000 on Tegaderm/DuoDerm.  Any hospital pharmacy worth its salt will have it in a variety of sizes.  I use it all the time.  I crash pretty spectacularly almost every year :/

x 4

I had a severe burn on my wrist a few years back (from boiling water) and the Silvidine Cream was like magic.  I could not believe how quickly it relieved the pain and despite severe blistering and nerve damage, I have zero scaring.  I'm still dumbfounded when I think about it.

(I also never thought of using it for road rash, but it makes a lot of sense and I'll definitely now think to ask for it if I'm ever in that situation).

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Everyone above has given great advice and I don't have anything different to contribute. I just wanted to add to the well wishes for a full and speedy recovery for your daughter. I'm glad she has parents who are on the ball, especially concerning that concussion. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I am honestly on the verge of tears. Today we took the Duoderm off. I actually let her do it because I wanted her to control how fast she took it off. I am stunned!!! She grew all new beautiful skin. I am here to tell you her face was bleeding and oozy with a wound the size of a plum on her cheek. (It seems that is what hit the pavement first). The Duoderm worked like magic! Thank you so much for the suggestions. This Mama and her beautiful 8 year old are very grateful. Kiss

That's great Keri, I hope that she (and you) survived the boredom of the low brain activity.
