Subject: Swim Times
How should I expect my Ironman swim time to compare to what I'm doing in the pool? Last night I swam the full 2.4 miles in the pool in about 1:39. I haven't been able to do much open water swimming because of the weather, but I hope to get out about 2 times before the St. George Ironman in 2 weeks. I will have a full wetsuit and the lake is expected to be 60-65 degrees. I know there are probably a lot of factors that go into this, but I'm just wondering whether my pool time should give me any hint about what might happen on race day. I'm completely freaked out about making the 2:20 cut off time.

Was that with rests or was that straight? Flip turns or not? With that time you are at a 2:33 per 100. In my experience with open water vs pool, i am much faster in open water because you don't stop, don't have to turn around and you get into a better rhythm.  I wouldn't worry at all about missing that cutoff time.

Thanks for the input. That was in a 25 yard pool, no rests, and no flip-turns. I always wonder whether pushing off of the wall decreases my time significantly (and, I guess, off-sets the delay in having to stop and turn every 25 yards). Not to mention the rest from grabbing the wall every 30 to 40 seconds vs. swimming continuously.

If you can swim 4200 yards in 1:39, don't worry about the 2:20 swim cutoff.  There are a lot of factors that either add or subtract a little bit of time, but these would generally be on the order of ±5 minutes (total).

Wetsuit and the lack of stopping/turning will help you.  Open water navigation and the lack of pushoffs will slow you down.  Mass start?  I'd suggest adding about 5 minutes to your swim time up front while you wait for the crowd to disperse.  (In actuality, it'll probably be 2-3 minutes, but you won't get as anxious starting 3 minutes later when you'd planned 5 than if you start 3 minutes later planning for 2.)  You can spend those minutes standing on shore or in shallow water (don't just go tread water), but you'll expend far less energy waiting and swimming in clear water than you will swimming in the scrum.

You have a lot going for you.

1. You already know you can swim that far.

2. You are way under the cut off time

3. You will be wearing a wetsuit that will make you a bit faster

Sure you will be slowed down at the start but you still have a huge cushion.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

So, how did your IMSG swim turn out?  It was a bugger out there!  Hope you survived to weather the bike and run!
