Howdy.  I'm looking for an Olympic distace race in Mid-August as my last event prior to tapering for IMWI.  I almost registered for Maple Grove, but it's only 2 weeks before IMWI and racing it seems kind of like playing with fire.  The St. Paul Tri at Lake Phalen is also out - I've done that before and don't care to do it again.

I did a search on previous posts related to Lake Marion.  Most mentioned how the bike course was a little squirrley and how the lake could be a little choppy (depending on the weather).  I don't mind a difficult course, as long as I'm not going to get swallowed up by any potholes.

I'm wondering if anyone can speak to the race organization.  Was it well run?  Did they seem to have their act together? Were there any logistic issues?  Would you recommend it to someone who just wants to enjoy a race day and add to his t-shirt collection?

Thanks in advance!

I'd be curious to hear some opinions on this race as well. I've already signed up for the Oly as my last race before IMWI and only signed up based on date and location (I live in Apple Valley), but know little else about the race organizer's or logistics.

I did it a few years ago (before they went short and longer courses), but I found it to be well run, and a cute little race. The run (5k) was deceptively challenging (sort of like Waconia...you don't THINK it's going to suck, but somehow it manages). I think the bike course is a bit different now, but it was mildly rolling, and not that bad (except for the weird jaunt across a bike path).

I thought the race was well run and pleasant and I plan to do it again. I agree the run is hard, but not in a really bad way, just a little hilly. The roads in lakeville are nice. I think the course itself is new, but I don't expect bad roads like with mg. I am about 90 % in for the Olympic this year.

This is a well run race. I haven't raced on the new course (I'm signed up for this year) but I have ridden the roads that the Olympic will be held on and they are in generally good condition. This is a much different course than a few years ago when it had lots of turns and even a little bike path section. In my opinion the new bike course is better. I think you'll enjoy it if you sign up.

I did the sprint last year for the first time, and it was an enjoyable race. The bike was on decent roads, and the run was rolling and "pleasantly challenging." It's on my radar again this year. My brother-in-law and I both had a good time there, but we both did the sprint.

Alright, alright.  You've convinced me.  I completed my registration for the Oly distance this morning since the fee goes up again on 5/1.

Thanks for the push everyone!

I did the run portion both of the 5k and the 10k in successive years (2010/2011). Great volunteers and no problem with organization. Definitely NOT an easy course. There is some climbing on the run and my sister-in-law says the bike was challenging, though she turned in a good performance on a cross bike without a lot of training. My wife swam both the long and short races and  no issues. Those two races were her only outdoor swim competitions. The only thing that went wrong is that volunteer tried waving me in on the first loop instead of the second.  Short answer, I recommend it. P.S. I love the idea of a double loop on the run. I was ready for the camera guy the second time around. Smiling as though the run was the easiest thing in the world.

stevestenzel - 2012-04-23 8:31 It's on my radar again this year.

Not registered yet.. but the Lake Marion Sprint is on my radar as well.
I liked the bike.... but can't say I was smiling at the up-hill water stop & turnaround.

Either way (compete or not) - Still planning to do the course for a couple backyard training swim/bike/runs sessions.
