I went out there on Saturday and did part of the bike course.  I actually missed a turnaround and went 78 miles instead of the 56 mile course.  Basically, I did a lot more than the course, but I did get a good feel for it what is to come.  Everything that's been described above is accurate.   I did run into some small hills that required my highest gear and still I had to get up off the seat on those.  However, I think those hills may have been in the sections that are not part of the course.

I've decided however that I am going to use a compact crank with an 11-26 cassette just to make sure I've got high gear to pull out if necessary.  Definitely little to no shade on the bike course, but it is flat much of the way.  I didn't have time to check out the run course unfortunately.  Perhaps on another visit to Sac next month.

Thanks for the update ecpasos! I'll be sure to report my visit of our stomping grounds on 7/23 if you are unable to make it there before.

I just noticed that the bike course has changed a bit. 2 loop course rather than 1.  And also will server Cytomax instead of Heed.

From the website:

his will be a 2 loop bike course in 2012 to assure the safety of all participants keeping the bike course inside the city limits for the 56 mile course

Click here to view a printable bike course map.

There will be 2 water stations on the bike course providing water and Cytomax hydration drink.

Mile 19: Water, Cytomax Hydration, Clif Blocks and Gel shots
Mile 38: Water, Cytomax Hydration, Clif Blocks and Gel shots

Unfortunately, I was unable to make it to Folsom today to scout out the course. I will however be going this Wednesday(7/25) if anybody is interested in meeting up. I plan on being there around 8am.

Sorry for the late update of my scouting out of the course. As many have stated before me, the swim will be a perfect venue, but a little chilly. The bike course is flat with gently rolling hills and 2-3 climbs and absolutely no shade. I was able to take video of the bike course for those of you who were unable to make the trip to the course. And, finally the run is like the bike. It's a windy Multi-Use-Path with minimal hills, patches of shade, but mostly open to the sun.

Here are the videos of the bike course. Hope it helps and looking forward to seeing a few faces this weekend! Let the taper beginYell

I'm sad to say that because of some injuries (and by some, I mean 3!) I won't be competing.  Best of luck to you.   It would be great if you posted a race report of how it went for you.  I may do this next year, God willing!

By the way, nice video. I only saw #1, but that route is oh so familiar. I did it 2 times this year.  I will never do that again though.  With no shoulders in some areas and lots of traffic even on weekends, it's too dangerous without roads being blocked.   Hope to actually do it during a race some time!

Look for me on the run course!  I'm volunteering as a run marshal tomorrow.  Yell out "Enrique!"  when you see a guy wearing dark Oakley sunglasses and wearing a volunteer shirt and a white hat.  I'll know it's you since I will really only know one other person there.

Good luck!!

Hope the race went well today, you had perfect weather (a little windy, but not hot).  Sure beats last weekend's 106 temperatures.

Looking forward to reading race reports.

Anyone else doing this race this year?  I started a thread a while back, it put it in the Iron Distance Race Groups forum for some reason, but there's no chatter.
