Subject: How do I get out of the pool?
I have a pool tri coming up in a few weeks.  I was reading a race report and someone posted about how she had trouble getting out of the pool.  My arms are going to be tired and if I'm in the deep end there is no way I will be able to hike myself on to the pool deck.  I PM'd the author of the report but she hasn't been on in a while.  Anyone have any graceful tips for an Athena to get out of a pool without using a ladder? Sealed

It will likely end at or near a ladder

My first couple of races I worried about the same thing so I asked the person in charge of the swim if I could just get out on the ladder and then swiped my ankle across the mat.  I was just looking to finish so the extra few seconds meant I was much more comfortable and less anxiety.  Best of luck to you.

I have never done a pool swim Tri but I know people who have and they advised that the finish is either at a ladder or steps that enter into the pool. Either way, I am sure that there will be volunteers to help pull people out if need be. I would recommend sending an email to the RD and tell them your concern and see what they have to say about it. Good luck but I am sure you will be fine.

Grab the edge of the pool, submerge yourslelf vertically until your fingers are just barely holding on then shoot up kicking with your legs and pulling with your arms. Do a little twist once you clear the edge so you your rear catches the edge, then just swing your legs out and your good.

Do practice once or twice before the race.

I would definitely work on trying to get yourself out in the next few weeks, you might surprise yourself!  I know it's harder when it's in the deep end.  There might be a ledge to help you out.  Sometimes in the deep end, if the water is low (depending on gutters, etc) this is not as easy.   I am sure you can find your way to a ladder if need be.

Have a great race!

I did one pool tri and the finish was in the shallow end of the lane so it was a hop out.  In the pool they should que you up by your anticipated swim time.  It worked well and was not pushed to get out of the next person's way.  I hope that will be the same for you.  If you finish in the deep end there should be a ladder, use it as this is also about safety too.  Practice getting out of the pool when tired using a ladder and by pushing your self out.  SAFETY SAFETY first!  YOU can do it!  Remember in some things moving slower and deliberately is faster cause you get it right the first time.  Have fun

I usually pull myself up just to get a knee on the deck.  Then I can get out from there.  As mentioned, it depends on the gutters.  One pool has a textured grated gutter, it would hurt to put a knee up on that one so I use the ladder there.

Oh yeah, the graceful pool exit. I remember having a sore knee and at some point I think I rolled away from the pool. Embarassed It happens so fast. Make sure you practice getting out before hand. I also remember hearing my name over the load speakers. "There is TJ Templeton on his way to transition, it's his first tri so cheer him on." I was at that point in the rolling phase of my knee assisted tuck and roll pool exit. I'm just glad nobody yelled "Free Willy!" I was sure thinking it.

Good times.

I did a Tri in a pool.  I hate getting myself out.  The best tip is to bring a towel , fold it up, and place it on the edge of the pool.  Then when you pull yourself up, you have some cushion vs the hard concrete.

Here's a picture of the odd shelf thing on the side of the pool.  Guess I'll have to try to get a knee up and hike myself from there.  I had the beached whale roll down pretty well at practice Sealed

That is a dilemma.  I would have trouble with that too.  Do you know if they have "Helpers" like at an outdoor tri where people help you unzip your wetsuit?

If it was me, I would do the knee-up beached whale roll..

Also, when does the clock stop?  Is it when you are out of the pool, or when you touch the wall.  Do you go right into T1 time?

I guess I'm asking if they time you getting out of the pool?

At both pool swim-tri's I've done, they have had helpers, two per lane, pulling people out. Timing depends on where they put the mat. Might be right outside the pool door or might be right by the transition area.

Oh, I would definitely use the shelf for my foot as I am coming up.  Since you can stand, just take a good hard jump and go for it.  It's very much mind over matter.  But just let your lane mate go first (if they are also there) so you can use the whole area.

Definitely practice getting out of the pool before the race. I would push out and swing my knee up on the first ledge and then very manatee like pull myself over the second ledge. Not pretty but it would work. Are you able to contact anyone from the race to find out how the lanes will be set up? On my first (and still only) tri I had the same dilemma. After a few days of worrying I contacted the 'help desk' for the race via email and they told me the end lap of the swim would complete at a ladder. Felt much better after that!

I have an e-mail into the race director.  We got the Athlete's packet and it ignores it.  There are two people at the end of each lane (volunteers are counting laps).  Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone.

No helpers.  Since there were no lane assignments, I got lane 2 and just used the ladder to get out.  I did practice before hand and could get out, but figured I would be tired after the swim and not sure I would make it.

They timed until you hit the transition area outside the pool building so my swim time was way slower than I thought.

Thanks for your help everyone.
