The Original 7833![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raleigh/Durham | Subject: ? for the New YorkersI am working on nailing down my lodging for the NYC Marathon. I am not familiar with the city- AT ALL I found a place on vrbo.com that's near Central Park- near Columbus Ave and 81st Street. I noticed that the finish line for the marathon is a lot farther south in the park than this condo. Can anyone tell me approximately how many miles that would be to walk after the race? Is there any way I could easily catch a subway or something if I don't want to hobble back? I'm just trying to decide if the location is a deal breaker since I do want something closer to the finish line.

Expert 1168![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New York | Subject: RE: ? for the New YorkersHowdy! That's my bf's neighborhood, incredibly convenient to Central Park and -- unless they changed the course of the NYC marathon since November -- it is in fact INCREDIBLY close to where you exit the park (note: the finish line is NOT where you exit the park -- they make you do this horrifying death march up to 79th street -- I exited the park at the Natural History Museum, conveniently about two blocks away from my bf's apartment). Best way to understand distance in NYC is that 20 blocks = 1 mile. You finish at 66th street by (what used to be) the restaurant Tavern on the Green and then they make you WALK to get your bags which are much farther away further north in the park (a little over half a mile -- brutal but good for the legs to keep moving). THAT said, if you're miserable and don't want to walk, once you get out of the park, you can find the C train on Central Park West, which is the avenue that runs right next to the park. It has stops at 59th, 72nd and yes, 80th street! Yet another convenient way to get home. You honestly could not have picked a better spot for a hotel for the NYC marathon. Also there are some REALLY great brunch places at 80th and Columbus -- Isabella's, Ocean Grill, Blossom, if you're vegan, Spring if you have people who are vegan and people who aren't -- heck, even Shake Shack for some fries, burgers and a-mazing shakes if you're hungry. And you will be. Whew. That's a lot of info! Good luck! |

Regular 103![]() NYC/South Jersey | Subject: RE: ? for the New YorkersGood info from Swishy. Past years you had to walk a considerable distance to retrieve your baggage after the race. The UPS trucks are lined up in the park according to your race number. Even though the finish is at Tavern Green you would have to walk North while in the park to get your baggage. I remember a few times I would exit the park in the 80s. Last year when I did the race I am sure it was not as bad but a nice little walk. From last years info:
"UPS baggage trucks will be lined up in the finish area according to your race number. Your baggage-truck number corresponds with your race number. Baggage pickup for athletes with disabilities, including wheelchair and handcycle entrants, will be in the AWD reunion area on West 72nd Street."
All that to say you will prob be able to walk to your flat after the race. Dont bank on getting a cab after the race as it is very difficult to find one but the Subway is down the block. |

The Original 7833![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: ? for the New YorkersGreat info- thanks guys! I'm going to go ahead and book this place. Seems like after the post race walk through Central Park, I won't have too far to left to walk once I exit the park. Seems like it should work out perfect
