Subject: Moving to Daytona. Maybe.

So my job search now has me in consideration for a position or two at a new facility in Daytona Beach.  It is not a sure thing, however the same management company interviewed me for three months a couple years back for a similar job in Jacksonville, and I literally HAD the job in Columbus Ohio before the existing tech changed his mind about leaving.  They've talked to me a lot so I figure my odds are better than ever this time around.

Either way, whenever I have any serious interest from a company I start researching everything about and around the job.

While I'm not thrilled with the rate of car on bike incidents due to all the snowbirds and tourists I am intrigued by the year-round outdoor training opportunities.

Where could I get some good rides in without constant stops? Best pool options? Safest/most convenient place(s) to swim at the beach?

The business location is near the Speedway/Airport/Kennel Club.

Initially I would move there alone, but would be bringing the family in later so I also need to ask about where to look into residing.  Where are the good schools and which neighborhoods should I avoid?

Any help much appreciated.  Nothing is a done deal at this point, but at least I now have something specific to work on instead of the usual nightly random web browsing...

I've lived in Volusia county most of my life and work at the Jail in Daytona, Great area to live and train. I ride mostly on the West side of the County, Deland Orange City area, I know the Tomoaka (sp) loop is real popular with East side riders. Most of the LBS have group rides which might be a good way to learn the area.

The YMCA in Port Orange has a nice pool and I think they have a Master swim program. I know their USA Swim team is top notch  that where Ryan Locke came out of. The beach is open and you can swim any where parts of it are open to driving on and there are some nice parks where there is no driving allowed.

I would not want to live in Daytona Beach proper but Port Orange is nice so is Ormand Beach (this is where the Loop is) if you don't mind driving Palm Coast is an option you could also go east to Deland. Stay off beach side unless you move all the way to Ponce Inlet.

I like Volusia County there is plenty to do here if you like the out doors. Just remember Fl gets brutally hot in June and stays that way until the end of Oct. come here in Aug. or Sept. to see what it really like. Daytona is also an event city race week bike week spring break biketober fest. The population can double during events and traffic on International Speedway Blvd can be nasty during the races in Feb. and July.

Plenty of training opportunities and groups. I work out with a smallish tri group in Ormond and there is always someone doing something at different times of the day/days of the week that you could get in with. Lots of group rides all over the county as well of various different levels. The only thing that will limit you here is your own time and schedule. Actually, fresh water open water swims you may have to drive a little but the Atlantic works great on most days. Sometimes it can be almost as flat as a lake.

Avoid Holly Hill, and to some extent South Daytona and Daytona Beach Shores. Port Orange has been recommended as well as Ormond. Flagler Beach is nice if you like quaintness, Palm Coast has very newer homes for very affordable pricing but it would be a significant drive for you to work. You could get to where you work from Port Orange in prolly 10 minutes in the morning, 15 tops.
