Subject: Riding around OC Fairgrounds Question

I am the shuttle for my training partner for the OC Half Marathon on Sunday and we are driving up from Encinitas that morning.  I am signed up for the race but it has taken me longer to recover from an injury than I thought it would so I will DNS and play it safe.

My plan is to drop her off at the start and then go and park at the finish (OC Fairgrounds).  Since I will have around 90 minutes to kill I thought I would bring my bike up and get a short ride in. I am not too familiar with the area and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?  Even a suggestion of a street(s) to avoid would be helpful?  I have looked at a map and also the half marathon and marathon routes but I am not sure what streets are bike friendly.  It will be fairly early so traffic (except for the race) should not be too bad.

Thanks

Just wanted to add that I am not looking for any fancy route and don't mind doing short loops or even doing some hill repeats.

Thanks again

The best ride would be around the Back Bay, but I am pretty sure that it is part of the course and will be closed.  Not much in the way of hills around here...

My advice would be to ride north on Fairview to Adams.  Go left on Adams and take that approx. 1.5-2 miles to the bottom of the hill.  Cross over the wash and pick up the Santa Ana River Trail.  You can get on it on the right side once you go over the wash.  It will loop you under Adams and you can ride this (south) to the beach.  It is approx 3 miles to the beach.  Then you can go north on PCH for as long as you want and then turn around and take the same route home.

Have fun!

The Back Bay loop is probably the best ride and it is not part of the OC Marathon course as of last year because the environmentalists threw a fit.

Look up Muth Interpretive center online, it is a good starting point for the 11 mile ride around Back Bay and should be clear to ride.  It is also close enough to the Fair grounds that you could ride over and back easily.

If you get to PCH and want hills head south to Laguna.

Thanks for the info everyone!  I will check out both routes and put one of the routes into my Garmin 800 and see what happens.  Hope the weather is good.

After racing the 1/2 this wknd also, I would have recommended using your bike to get out of the parking lot...what a mess!
