Subject: Elbow pain biking

Hello, I am training for my first triathlon and when I do my training ride on my bike I notice that the inner part of the joint of my elbow is extremely painful when I bend it. I now try to make a point to bend the elbow frequently when I ride, but is this normal? I don't remember this kind of pain as a kid.

Reach/fit issue to the bars would be my guess.

Do you have aero bars or is it a standard road bike?

A lot of time when people have arm issues it is because they are overextended and putting too much weight on the wrists, they "lock" their arms out straight, or they maintain a "white knuckled death grip" on the bar when riding.

Agreed. You are probably puttin too much pressure on your arms and wrists. Often when you start riding a road bike it takes some time for the muscles in your lower back to strengthen and take some of the pressure off your arms and shoulders. You can take the bike to the lbs and talk to them. They could raise the bars, switch to a shorter stem and make the fit less agressive until you build up the strength and are used to supporting yourself without your arms. Your hands should rest lightly on the handlebars.

Good advice.....you might definatley going to your local LBS and making sure your stem length is correct.....Also, new riders have a tendancy to "lock out" their elbows and be very stiff. Your arms should be relaxed and your elbows should be slightly bent. Changing your position on your bike can be very helpful as well. Ride on the top of the bars for awhile then switch to the drops...if you have aerobars use them as well....

Along what Tri-It said, a little trick I'll do throughout my rides is the "shoulder shrug" to make sure my upper body is loose, and the "finger wiggle" when I climb with my hands on the tops of the bars. You just want to make sure you are as relaxed as possible and let the proper muscles do the work.

Have your position checked out bya friend who is a cyclist or better yet your shop you bought it from, and try to observe some of the things we mentioned to see if you fall into those categories.

Thank you for all the advice I will give it a try. I would never have thought it would be my alignment.

"white knuckled death grip" on the bar when riding

Mine tend more towards red. A red knuckled death grip on the bar.
