Subject: NYC Swimming

Hello All!

I'm about to move from the Upper West Side to Inwood.  I currently swim at Columbia University, but will be looking for an affordable indoor pool/gym that is either near my apartment (Inwood) or work (East Harlem near Metro North).  I'm a social worker so I'm on a very tight time and financial budget!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Andrea

Howdy! I live near the GWB in Hudson Heights, but I go to the Chelsea Rec Center pool. It's run by NYC Parks and Rec, super cheap (like, $150 a YEAR, I kid you not -- it's not fancy by any stretch of the imagination, but on a budget, it's flipping awesome). I know that's out of your way (it's actually even out of MINE, ha), but membership to the Parks and Rec gives you access to ALL their pools in NYC:

Not sure exactly where Metro North is, but there might be one near enough to you to be acceptable.

Also, come summertime, Lasker Pool in Central Park (on 110th street) opens up (for free!) lap swimming in the early morning.

Hope that helps!

The pool in Riverbank State Park (around 145th St., on the Hudson) is only $2 per use (or a very cheap monthly rate if you go often). The times are a little tight: it's open for lap swimming in early morning or in the evening, from around 6-8:15, but it can't be beat.

Another Parks and Rec pool on 134th between Park and Lennox (Hansborough Rec Center). Not as nice as the Chelsea Pool, but for $150, you get access to both for the year. You can also pay $75 for six months, then $75 later for the next six months.

July and August - outdoor free pools out in Marcus Garvey Park (120th and 5th) with adult swim hours from 7-8:30, or Lasker Pool at 110th and Lennox in Central park has morning and evening adult swim.

Marcus Garvey is my favorite, but unfortunately not open all year long. If you end up heading there in the summer, shoot me a message and I'll keep an eye out!

Thanks, everyone!  That's super helpful, and I had no idea there were such affordable pools around.  That bodes well for my training!  I just ended up signing a lease for a place on the Upper West Side, but some of these places seem worth a subway ride for sure.

Queens/Nassau County

I've been on a search for something that works in my schedule/budget for YEARS. I live in Queens (Middle Village- Forest Hills area) and work in Nassau county, westbury. In the past, I had a membership with the Parks pool, but the Williamsburg pool had a mold problem I couldn't take (I'm allergic) and the Flushing meadows pool, while nice, was like, an hour to get in the pool once you've parked, so not very convenient for a new mom who has very rationed time away from baby (I also work full-time, 7am-2pm sometimes longer). My only option so far is to go to the NYSports Club in Hicksville before work 3 days a week I can get a 20-30 min swim in there. It's a shallow pool so it won't be great once I am swimming better but it's all I can do.

Anyone in the NYC/Nassau area know of other options? the Eisenhower Park pool is very expensive if you aren't a nassau resident.

Maybe one of the college pools would work out for you? I used to belong to the gym at Adelphi in Garden City, but I imagine Hofstra would have community memberships too.

I used to be a member at LA Fitness off Lakeville Rd.  They had a decent pool.

I live in Queens (Astoria) area and I go to the Astoria Sports Complex, not the cheapest, but cheap relative to other places.
