I came across this link on the Wasatch 100 website.

When I introduced my running partner, Natalie, to trail running, she referred to me and my friends as "psychos."  Maybe she was on to something...

I honestly can't remember where the quote came from, but I have always thought this was great:

"It takes an idiot to run a marathon, but it takes a special kind of idiot to run an ultra!"

The chicken or the egg... I would lean towards thinking that all the running ultra runners do changed the way their EEGs looked over time, and remember that EEGs are a fairly blunt instrument measuring the collective action of millions of neurons at a time... no one uses them to even support a diagnosis ADHD, psychosis, any personality disorder.

Anyone give this book a read? Its an easy read on how exercise effects the brain.  I'm most of the way through it, but laid it down a while ago and haven't formed an opinion on it.

As as to why we do it... why does anyone do anything?  Using terms from another poster: It seems like we started as idiots and run ourselves into being ultra idiots! haha, addicted.

I agree with the premise of Spark, there are several other books that have come to the same conclusion. 'The Happiness Hypothesis' is another book, that while not directed at running, talks about how exercise affects a person's overall 'happiness'.

I did my ultras so I could be cool.  I did a marathon thinking I would be cool and then found out all my friends did ultras so I did it trying to fit in.
