Subject: Average 100 swim times

I'm really working hard to improve my swim times and would like to get a better sense of how long it takes the average person to hit the 100y bench mark.  My best time is 1:50 and my average over distance is about 2:10.  What would a reasonable goal be?

Thanks!

About 3 weeks ago I did a straight mile (1800yds) at about 2:14/100.  A week ago I did the same distance in 2:01/100.  I'm kind of new, but I'd say if you can get it under 2:00/100 that would be a good next goal.

Honestly, rather than worring about your times I would be more concerned about improving your stroke dynamics. If your stroke is not efficient will be hard to get any faster.

It depends on these simple factors:

  • How many yards per session you swim
  • How many times a week you swim
  • How well designed your swim sets are
  • How efficient your stroke mechanics are

Disclaimer: I am not a coach but I am a life long swimmer. It seems that the minimal threshold for effort is 3 sessions/week @ 2000 yards per session with plenty of intervals if you want to see modest time improvement and increase in endurance. I think 3 sessions/week @ 3000 yards per session and you should see real speed and endurance gains. Like any sport, you need to gradually build to that effort.

Are you still wearing a baggy swim suit?

If you are, the best thing you can do is get a pair of jammers and you will instantly cut 15-20 second off your 100 pace.

I don't think you need swim 3x3000 a week.  If you have bad form, that distance will just tire you out and your form will degrade more as your workout goes on.  I've been swimming almost two years I can maintain a pace of 1:37/100 over a 1000 yards, I can go in 1:20s for 100 intervals  and I only swim between 3000-4000 a week.  What helped me the most was switching to jammers and then doing drills to work on form.  Although I would say I'm swimming better with 3 short swims a week instead of two longer one which I was doing last year.

I found working on form and technique helps a lot. Go to http://www.swimsmooth.com/ and you'll learn about catch and pull, breathing technique, etc. The Mr. Smooth illustration lets you see and visualize how to swim. It really helped me. I used to be right at 2:00. Now I'm at 1:40 and can get into low 1:30 for short distances. And I ain't no swim team dude.

15-20 seconds? no way, more like 1.5-2.0 seconds. you're off by an order of magnitude

I was stuck at that 2:02/100m for what seemed like forever. These days if I can average under 2:00/100m I'm a happy camper...I suppose as I get better that will all change, but for now that what I set my goals at. For 100m intervals I'm at about 1:30,  for 1500m I'm at about 1:48 and for 2500m I'm at about 1:57. Still a work in progress, but I am seeing progress and that's what I care about most.

i read somewhere that,

>3min per 100 yards - your technique really sucks

2min-3min per 100y - your technique still sucks but they're much less.

1.5-2min per 100 yard - you probably one have or two flaws in your technique

1-1.5min/100 yard - your stroke is the shizzle

<1min/100 yard - start practicing your poses for the podium.

this only counts over 500 or 1,000+ yards

i'm not talking about  swimming 25 or 50 yards and then extrapolating.

No, I'm serious.  In Dec. '10 when I was still trying to swim laps with a baggy swimsuit, the best I could do for a 100 was ~1:50, and I averaged over 2:00/100.  That baggy suit developed a rip so I decided to try jammers.  On the very first swim in jammers, I did a 100 in less than 1:35 and was shocked.  My first though was I'll never swim laps in a baggy swimsuit again.

Forget about "reasonable" goals. Aim high.
