Subject: Season Opener

For those who are doing the Season Opener...I thought I would post about the OWS! I was in Hopkinton today and the water is cold! The temp at the edge was 55*, so I am guessing the temp in the actual lake is about 52-53*. I swam the course twice and I was fine but I am used to cold  open water swimming. I wore a regular cap, neoprene cap, ear plugs, a full wetsuit and booties. My speed was slower than normal due to the cold as well.

If you havent done this race before I would advise a neoprene cap and booties. Also you may want to bring hand warmers for the bike and gloves. I plan on wearing socks on the bike and slipping a plastic baggie over the front of my foot to keep it warmer( no time for booties, its a sprint!) You also might want to consider a cap for under your helmet to keep your head warm...especially females who will have lots of wet hair!

Its a fun race and as always Max Performance does a great job. See everyone at the race!!!

Interesting that it hasn't warmed up much since you posted on March 21!

Good luck everyone!

This makes me even more comfortable with the decision to do the du instead of the tri for this race. Not that it'll be much warmer in 3 weeks in Cohasset, but ... maybe?

Thanks for the info mav!  When I registered for this I thought...mid-May will be warm!  (Eeekk...not so much this year).   I am going to the swim clinic tomorrow that Max puts on to see if I can handle swimming in the cold (I am worried about my lungs with asthma).  I did the Mooseman swim in 2007 and I thought THAT was cold :/.  I have booties, neoprene cap and long sleeved wet suit.  I may switch to the du too.

Come on, people. It isn't cold with a wetsuit! I've done this one 3 years in a row, and it's always fine. Just bring a layer for the bike, that's all :-)

I'm signed up for the tri on Sunday and will join the Max Performance swim clinic tomorrow for my first OWS.  I have the full wet suit, booties and neoprene cap so hopefully I'll be fine.

Question - A friend loaned me a short sleeved wet suit.  I saw on the site that wet suits were required.  I know it's cold but I don't have any other options.  Are they gonna let me race?

Thanks,

DQ

Email Tim Richmond, the race director. In my experience, he's been great about getting back to me promptly with any race related questions I have had in the past.

Hope everyone is having fun.

Why do they need to schedule this on Mothers Day every year? I'll never be able to make it.....
