Subject: Plan Q's and Splitting workouts...

I'm about 20 wks away from my firs HIM.

My thought is to follow the BT plan.

Several questions:

I've been training on my own just basically trying to bike and run 3 times a week with a long distance increasing bike or run on alternate weekends... My longest run  15.25 and my longest bike was this morning at 41.4mi

Quesiton #1

If I stick to the BT plan then at least in the beginning I'll be running/biking less than I have been

Should cut back or just go the distances I've been going til the plan catches up?

Question #2

In trying to fit all of this in I've been riding my bike to/from work a couple times a week. Its 9 miles each way...

I can extend the ride to make whatever distance is specified...  say the plan calls for a 25 mil ride I do 16 in the morning and 9 in the evening, from a training perspective how does splitting the ride up like that change the  conditioning, etc...?

If the plan calls for 25 should I just do 25 on one leg and call the 9 mi second ride a bonus?

I'm training for Coeur dAlene right now and did St George in 2010...

Prior to starting my training plan this year I was working out longer hours than needed at the start of the plan.  I just started as the plan stated and called it semi-recovery.  No need to over-do it this early in the training plan.

Also, to get in all the workouts, I HAVE to split some of the workouts because of my work schedule.  I don't know if this hindered me in any way (I did reach my goal of finishing upright and smiling in St George).  Some weeks I would split a bike workout in half (45min and 45 min), other I would do 30 and 60, for example.  I have been doing the same thing this time, only I have been adding another bike workout of less than an hour some weeks.  This seems to be working pretty good for me as I am still showing measurable gains in training.

Good luck!

Good questions, those of us following the BT 1/2 iron beginner plan discuss stuff like this constantly, over at:http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=223022&start=3001&posts=3020

My personal opinion is that splitting up the workouts is OK as there is arguably equal benefit to "more frequent" workouts as you're effectively doing --SO LONG AS you get enough of the long bricks in to the mix.

I think the plan has quite a bit of flexibility.  I for one dont get too caught up in the minutia of the "drill details" as much as putting in the time and the volume.  My $0.02 only
