Subject: Fink and Sufferfest for HIM/IM training?

Hi, I'm training for a marathon at the moment and starting to feel guilty about not cycling much!

I'm planning ahead for when my marathon's done and I think I'll concentrate on doing a few HIM's and then a full IM in 2014.

I've used a low volume version of the Fink plans before and I really like the way it fits in with my work/family life so what I'm planning is to do a modified Fink competitive plan for HIM and then the full volume plan for the full IM. That way I can get into a consistent routine and stick to it.

I love doing the Sufferfest videos (fun, killer indoor trainer videos) so I want to incorporate them into my training. My weakness is the bike at the moment so that's what my main focus will be after the marathon.

Any thoughts???

I don't think it's a problem as long as you can recover.  Nothing wrong with upping the bike intensity using Fink's plan.

I love that you feel guilty about JUST training for a marathon - hilarious!  I love Sufferfest DVD workouts, they kick my butt!

I don't get out on the bike much coz I'm scared of traffic but my handling skills are good enough, the strength gained from those indoor trainer workouts is amazing.

good luck - I'm doing my first HIM in 3 weeks using the beginner HIM plan but for full IM 2014 I'm going to combine Fink/Friel and a coach see what I come up with!

Hey David

I think we were in the same mentor group at the start of last year.

I am five weeks out from my first IM and have been using the sufferfest videos as one of my bike workouts most weeks. Seems to be working as I did a local cycling event today and finished way up the field compared to last year. (880/4000 compared to 1900/4000)

It fits in well with the fink plans when you get to the build phase as he starts to ask you to do some zone 4 intervals and there is nothing like a sufferfest to get you to zone 4!

I'm not aware of what is in the Sufferfest videos, but my initial gut reaction is that it's totally against Fink's philosophy. Pretty much everything is aerobic. Not until you get towards the last third of the Competitive plan do you start putting in Z4 workouts - and that's only stuff like 10 minutes worth. The way to safely increase mileage necessary for the Ironman is by doing lower impact work that you can recover from.

Maybe you can handle it. But for your first IM, my advice would be to follow the plan, see how much it kicks your butt as-is (which it will by the end of it), and then for your next IM, decide how and if you can incorporate Sufferfest workouts.

I guess if you're following a modified Fink plan for Half-IM, then a little more leeway for those videos. But listen to your body and rest if it's beating you up.

I beg to differ. As an example the midweek ride of week 16/30 asks for:

1:00 Zone 2, at 15 min
insert 5 x 5 min
Zone 4 @ 3 min spin

This can safely be substituted for something like the sufferfests "A Very Dark Place"

http://www.thesufferfest.com/video-sufferfests/a-very-dark-place/

  • 5:00 warm-up, with Asian racing footage from a member of the OCBC-Singapore National Team
  • 2×30 sprints, from start line of the OCBC Cycle Singapore professional criterium
  • 1:30 rest, because we’re not totally merciless
  • 5 x 4:00 sprints- with 3:00 rest between each interval. Each interval features pro-racing:
    • Solo breakaway in Paris-Nice
    • Small group breakaway in Fleche-Wallone
    • Joining Gilbert and the Schlecks as they attack in Liege-Bastogne-Liege
    • Following Cancellara – and trying to beat him – in Paris-Roubaix
    • Holding onto Wiggins and crew in Criterium du Dauphine
  • 4:00 recovery with some vintage cycling footage

As long as you stick to the long steady rides at easy pace then all is well.

I can recommend trainer road if you have a garmin. Makes sufferfest even better!

Hmmmmm...yeah, I think you're right there. I was probably thinking more about the running being limited to ~10 minutes, as well as assuming the videos are like a full hour of hard effort.

But anyway, looking at the plan, looks like there are about 4 or 5 weeks of those type of intervals, and then the plan switches to longer, sustained Z4 efforts - up to 30 minutes worth. So, I'll retract my statement and say that that there is some room to use the Sufferfest vids to replace the interval workouts. But I still wouldn't replace the non-interval workouts.

Hooray for agreement on an internet forum! A rare a beautiful thing.

20 - 30 mins of Z4 sucks badly. I find it hard to sustain unless I am on a hill that gives me no option.

One of the nice things about IM training is the high amount of low intensity training. Quite enjoying trying to keep the heart rate low rather than constantly feeling the need to push on.
