Ok so I have read every posted race report for the gear west DU and other insights related to just duathlons. I have never done a duathlon. I think I will be ready for the duathlon aspect. I am wondering if anyone has any gear west DU specific advice.

Footing on the run is hard, make sure your shoes are tied well   And, it will hurt a lot.

Bike:  there are two rather big hills.  One is early on (Homestead) and the second is back on Hamel.  Once you get through those, no more killers (in my opinion).  I just rode the course yesterday and it's pretty nice.

Have fun!  I'll be volunteering with the other LUNA Chix.

If it's wet, prepare to get really muddy on the runs and don't wear your favorite shoes.

(I'm assuming you've seen my write-ups on my blog... if not, stop by and look through my right side-bar for race reports from 2008 - last year.)

Like some have said, the run can get a little "funky." If it's not too wet, your footing will be OK on the first run, but it will always be worse on the second run once everyone's been over it once already. If it's going to be really wet, I'd bring 2 pairs of running shoes, because the first pair will be NASTY by the end of the first run. I nearly did that last year, and I should have!

The run loops around a lot, so just be ready for that. About 3/4s of the way through, you feel like you might be heading back to transition, but then you turn back into the woods for another few minutes.

It's a fun one!! It's the first time I'll miss this race since 2008, so have a good race for ME too!

Of course I have read your blog race reports, Steve. Thanks for the input ,all. It looks like the thunderstorms will be over, but scattered showers all morning; should make for a sloppy and messy race. Let the fun begin!

Scott Ransom. Whatever happened to you my friend. 8min pace on the run??? 1:32 total??? In bottom half of the age-group??? Man you're much faster than that.

Pete Webster. You've done well with 1:31. The bike must be a tough one.

BTW, my friend David Phillips finished 1:24:52. He's happy with it.

I was shocked to see his name just below mine in the results. Conditions were not good (low 50s and moderate mist/light rain for the ride and second run).  Surprisingly it wasn't as muddy as I expected. Thanks to BikerGrrrl and mnrunnergirl (and another BT'ers I didn't see or recognize) for volunteering today with the cold, wet conditions!!!

Well I WAS much faster than that.  This year is different.  My motivation to train and race is low, and I've struggled with some injuries (sore achilles and sprained shoulder - thank gawd these injuries didn't happen last year.)  I'm not even following a training plan this year.

So this year's goals are very modest...I just want to race some for the fun of it and not fall off too much and not gain too much weight.  I'm okay with this...it's my choice.  Maybe back into it harder in a year or two.

Oh, and I want to catch a lot of fish this year.

You TOTALLY deserve a "relax and refocus" year after getting ready for Kona! After training all winter, I paradoxically feel both under-prepared and somewhat burned out in getting ready for Liberty half. I'm not sure if I don't have the heart or don't have the time for long course racing and training. I mostly train alone, so that could account for some of the problems (no one else to be accountable to). The suggested volumes of the half-iron plan from here have been impossible for me to reach, mainly due to schedule conflicts with work and keeping the wife and 3 young girls happy and entertained. I think that my goal for doing an ironman in 2013 may simply not be realistic at this time.

Thanks Ryan.  By the way, I still remember the very nice post you made about my blog.  Sorry we didn't meet at the GW Du.  I have only seen your small BT profile photo, but I guess you've seen plenty of photos of me...hopefully at the next race you can spot me and stop and chat.

Under-prepared and burned out?  That is paradoxical!

Yah, work and wife and kids will cut into your training.  Only you can set your goals and priorites and find the training time amid those other priorities.  If a 2013 IM is not to be, then so be it.   You're kids will only be young once.  My first IM was at age 47.  Shared accountability, if you can swing it, will be a huge motivator.  I checked your GW Du results, and they are very respectable...but then again I don't have much knowledge of your previous results.  Hopefully you're satisfied with them.  If not, it's up to you to adjust accordingly - whether it's your goal, or your strategy to reach that goal that needs adjusting.  Anyway, good luck at Liberty.  An HIM is still a long long race, and if it's your first, it's quite an accomplishment.

I want to thank the LUNA CHIX for volunteering at the race.  I dont know how many of you there were, but it looked like a fair amount to me.  and thanks to all the rest of the volunteers also.  the race went off very smoothly.

Thanks Pete!   I wish I had been able to actually meet you.

I helped first with backup timing at the first run in, so I got to cheer for every single person.  Then I was handing out the timing slips so I probably actually talked to about 90% of participants again.   We had I think 5 Chix volunteering and then 2 at the booth, who also roamed around a bit; a good showing.

By the way, if you ever get the chance to volunteer and do backup timing I recommend it.   Super fun!  Well, there's one timing person I am not sure it would be fun to work for but I really liked helping John at JMS.

Well I probably saw you Emily.  But I wasn't looking for you and so didn't recognize you.  Sorry.  Maybe next time.  Maybe you should wear a big sign with "BIKERGRRRL - SAY HI TO ME" on it.

I've also volunteered to help timing with Mr. Snitko in the past, and it is indeed fun.

Nope, we weren't there. I am writing news items for the TriRochester website and needed results. The women's overall winner is in our club.
