Subject: Do you need a tri top to race?

I'm going to do a sprint this weekend. I've got a good pair of tri shorts, but not a tri top. Do I really need one? I've got a tight fitting Nike dri fit tank top, would that do? Is the tri top beneficial for performance, particulary in the water?

Thanks.

You won't need one. Your tank top will do fine. The tri tops have some pockets in the back, like a cycling jersey, you won't need them for a sprint

I'd attempt to take a swim in it before race day, see if it works for you.

you could also put it on in T1, but it's surprisingly hard to put a shirt on when you're wet, so you might want to try that out as well.  Best not to have any surprises come race day.  One 'wardrobe malfunction' could use up more time than you gained with 3 months of training.

Tri tops are not particularly good in water (they are usually worn under a wetsuit or swimskin).  One-piece trisuits are often used for swimming.

If the Dry-fit top is skin tight (i.e. Nike PRO) then it'll probably work fine.  Otherwise do the swim and bike without it and put it on in T2.

Go old school and don't wear a top for any portion of the race.

X2, unless the rules prohibit it. Around here (North Carolina), probably about half of the men don't wear shirts for sprints.
