Fellow BTers:

I will be moving to the Albany area in the coming weeks. I would like to know what are considered good venues for riding without too much traffic and running, i.e. paved bike trails or state parks, etc.

Also, any info you can share on where you swim will be greatly appreciated. I would like to find a place with an indoor pool so I can train year round.

Thanks

- Manuel

Do you know where in the Albany area yet?  That will make a big difference on what I know as I'm about 30 minutes north of the city.

My office is in Rensselaer. For now, I will be living close to my office. But most likely, once the family joins me, we will be looking for a house in Niskayuna. However, I looked at the Saratoga Tri Club site and then started doing some research about Saratoga Springs and the schools seem to be ranked very well.

I really liked the STC site, btw.

Ah very good.  You also have CDTC (Capital District Tri Club) down in the Albany area.  They are MUCH bigger than STC.

Both clubs are on Facebook.

Welcome to the area!

I work out and swim at the Ciccotti Center.  A lot of triathletes seem to go there, so there's a nice community, and Capital District Triathlon Club holds it's meetings there. Ciccotti is located in The Crossings, which is a nice place to get in a run or short ride.  CDTC has Tuesday evening workouts with open water swim in Averill Park starting in June.  I'm getting an Empire Passport this year to get in more open water swim practice.  I think Grafton Lake and Thompson Lake both have beaches.

Besides CDTC and STC, there's also Bethlehem Tri Club in the area.

My favorite place to ride is the Hudson-Mohawk Bike Trail.  I don't find Albany itself to be very bike friendly, but it doesn't take long to get out of Albany and onto some country roads.  I do pick-your-own a lot at Indian Ladder Farms and Bowman Orchards, so whenever I go I take my bike with me to get a ride in.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help you out with anything!

CDTC might be bigger, but that doesn't mean better.

Both CDTC and Saratoga Tri club are great teams with great people. Also if you find yourself living further north towards Glens Falls try the Adirondack Tri Club http://www.adktri.org/.

Allthree... clubs organize group swims/workouts all summer and are very well represented at the local(and not so local) races.

The Saratoga Springs area also has a great running club the Stryders (http://www.saratogastryders.org/)which... do group runs every Saturday morning and Wednesday evening. Also there are group bike rides almost every night of the week for all abilities from easy & fun to a Tuesday night hammerfest.

Blue Sky Bikes, Elevate Cycles, and Olde Saratoga Bike & Boards all host rides. I personally recommend Blue Sky if you need anything Tri related, great shop with great people, and in the winter they do a very fun and effective Tuesday/Thursday indoor cycling class.

I think everyone above got all the tri clubs in the area. For running clubs there is also the Albany Running Exchange - while based out of Albany, there are members all over so runs are everywhere in the area + Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club + Fulmont Runners.  For biking you also have http://cbrc.cc/,and... Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club http://webmhcc.org/rn/

Dear All:

BT is really great. I appreciate all the responses. For now, I am just trying to keep my fitness level until we are fully settled in the area. I look forward to joining the local tri community.

Thanks for all your help.
