Subject: Good training/racing tires

Hello,

I am really frustrated with tire durability.

Have been riding quite a bit this year and have blown through 3 sets of tire already.

Latest are the michelin pro race 3s I put on my new boyd carbon clinchers about a month ago.

I have maybe 400-500 miles on them and both front and rear tires have a sidewall cut in them already.

Looking for a good tire I can ride on to train and race with that wont wear out so fast.

Looking at the gatorskins but hear they are quite heavy and cost almost as much as more expensive 'race tires'

I just grabbed a pair of gommitalia Targa K Road Tire - Clincher Black/Red, 700/22 for $50 a piece on chainlove that retail for $90 a piece but am worried these are gonna have the same durability as the rest of the 'racing' tires

It might be worthwhile to consider an inexpensive set of wheels with gatorskins or some other more durable tire for training, and reserve using the race tires on your carbon wheels on race day only.

I get a lot of miles on these. I use them for training and road races but not TT's or Tris. If you're getting sidewall cuts, not many tires are going to help. Protection on most tires is along the main part of the tread, not the sidewalls.

There were three tire threads last week that had some great comparisons. The Continental 4000's for racing came up several times as well as the Gatorskins for durability

x2.  From performancebike.com

  • Sidewall cuts. The sidewall of a tire is not designed to contact anything, and is not durable like the tread of a tire. Many times this type of damage unknowingly happens when a cyclist loads his/her bike onto a vehicle, or leans it against something, like a curb, bench, or wall. The sidewall is generally made thin to keep the tire light and supple for good ride characteristics. Unfortunately with sidewall cuts, once they happen, there is no suitable repair. The tire will need replacing.

Preventative action: Avoid tire sidewall contact with sharp or rough objects.

Thanks all!

Knew the search comment was gonna come around and yes I did use the search function.

Have my wheels that came on the bike but I like using my carbon clinchers. I figure I paid for em I might as well use em.

Sidewall damage- does anyone ride where there are no rocks or objects that occasionally get ridden over? If so I want to ride there!

May just have to bite the bullet and invest in some gatorskins or conti 4000s as suggested and just put my race tires on for my big races.

Again thanks

Sidewall cuts - inflate, superglue, deflate, allow to set.  If the cuts are small this will patch them up.

And I always have two sets of tires - race tires (Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX) tires and for trainer tires I use whatever I find on sale really cheap (right now Hutchison Fusions).  Switching to the race tires and latex tubes is now a race prep tradition.

Thanks for the tip. I will definately try this. Do you glue right over  the tube? The tube is visible through the side wall cut.

Or inflate just enough so the cut is together like a skin incision? That makes a lot more sense ( think I just answered my own question

again thanks

Most everyone here has already said it, but sidewall cuts aren't usually a durability issue in terms of normal wear and mileage.  I'm currently racing the same tires as you and have only heard good things about their durability long term.  The other set that was recommended to me was the GP4000s.

I've been riding my GP4000s now for about 1500 miles and not a flat yet.  And since I'm lazy when it comes to tires, I left the latex tubes in them!

I just switched to the Conti GP4000s last week and so far so good.  I've only got about 100 miles on them, but a good 50 of those were riding the shoulder on the highway with lots of pebbles and rocks.  I gave them a good once over after the ride and no nicks at all.

I think i paid $75 ea. at a LBS here in town.  I saw them online in the mid $60's but figured I'd support the LBS.
