Pre-race routine:

We had a great BT get together at my place on Sunday night. There was plenty of beer, spaghetti, and desserts. The desserts all got left behind, so I have to either take them to work or eat them. Since I don't feel like toeing the line at IMLP with an extra 10 pounds, they'll go to work.

We ended up with somewhere around 20 people including: Vegas, CitySky, Comet, JeepFleep, NYTriGal and her husband, LisaJ and her husband, TriVeggies, sebjamesm and his wife, Cajun and her boyfriend, tag and his wife, nette213, her husband, and their nephew.....am I missing anyone?
Event warmup:

None, really. I got their later than I usually do and barely had time to set up transition before they closed it. Fortunately I had racked my bike the night before and had a spot at the end of the rack. The weather was humid but overcast, which was a nice way to start the race.

I tried to get some strokes in after they let us in the water but before the race started.
Swim
  • 27m 20s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first race since getting Jamie as my coach (who won today, by the way). I tried to use everything he said and it worked out very well. I actually found some good feet to draft off of for several large sections of the race, which is unusual for me, but good. I may have went a little hard, but not too bad.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

T1 is a long run out of the water around transition before you come into it, hence the long T1 time. Only 15 guys in my age group beat my T1 time. I know some of you think I obsess about transitions, but this is free time. At least 7 people in my AG would have beat me if they had matched my transistions.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 17s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't feel very strong on the bike today. My perceived effort was pretty high in the beginning for 200 watts. I ended up averaging about 195 and 22.1 mph. Aaron, you beat me by 1:31 on the bike. Of course, the 2:27 lead from the swim and the 2:45 I gained on T2/run more than made up for it ;)

The course was crowded, but there were several lanes and I never got held up as a result. I saw mkmbharris as he passed me on an uphill, but I passed him on the downhill side and don't remember seeing him again. As I turned a corner on my second lap, I heard "On your left" to my inside. I didn't realize until a few seconds later that it was Aaron. I yelled out that he was a bastard as gesture of friendship.

On my third lap, I had some TnT guy suck my wheel from the corner of Congress and Cesar Chavez all the way back around to South First, where he passed me! What an ass! He sucks my wheel for 2 miles and then passes? Dick.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I started feeling pretty good towards the 2nd lap.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

More free speed here. Only 6 people in the AG beat me through T2.
What would you do differently?:

Put socks on.
Run
  • 50m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

It started to get pretty warm out there by the time I hit the run. The sun came out and it combined with the humidity to make it pretty brutal. Fortunately, running through downtown provided some areas of shade from the buildings. I did discover that my latest pair of running shoes are not conducive to bare foot running. Just after starting the second lap, I noticed some pain on the arch of my left foot followed shortly by the backs of both ankles. There wasn't anything to do about it but keep going. I've got a couple of nice blisters going. Overall, I didn't push too hard on the run. I just didn't feel like I really had my legs under me.

I saw CitySky on the run looking good. She beat her 4 hour goal by over 12 minutes. Way to go, Celeste! I also caught sight of Vegas and Aaron a couple of times.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with everyone after the race and hung out for a bit. It was great getting everyone together and this is just a fun race to do.

Brandt is going to be pissed when he sees the pics!

Event comments:

Another good race this year and I beat my time by last year even though last year's course was short.

Good race Dennis.  Don't worry about the bike speed, it still looks fine to me.  I think you're just in the groove for IMLP, and all you're gonna need there is nice steady pacing!

Great race.  You have some awesome speed.  I also understand you are in the running for the Betty Crocker Award for best cooking.  It is also good to see so many BTers get together for a party, too.

OK Dennis.....I've waited long enough.  Post the Desiree Ficker pics NOW.  I know you saw her there, she always races CapTex.  But if you REALLY want to impress me, have her join me at CDA as my personal pro triathlete goddess jockstrap.

Dennis,

You did a great race man, congratulations! I loved the race and will be there again next year for sure.

Thanks again for being such a great host. I had a wonderful time.

Should we show Brandt our pics with Desiree or should we just let him suffer? Laughing

I'll add to the congrats and say nice to meet you and Aaron! I had to laugh when we passed each other. I usually never pass anyone going uphill and I usually never have anyone pass me going downhill (Gravity works with big guys). It was funny that it was reversed with us on the course.

Sorry I missed the dinner. I'm in for next time

Great job on your race and I don't think you are crazy for worrying about transition. I agree, it's free time!

Nice job! I am new to the group and only been doing tri's since june of 05 when I started training for my first one. Definately look foward to meeting any of the locals (austin area). I see you worked with Jamie Cleveland, is this with the texas iron group or individual. I have thought about texas iron group.

Great race, Dennis!  I saw you as you came out of the swim on your way to transition, you looked very focused.

Thanks for hosting a very splendid and relaxing party, great deck!  It was a wonderful way to relax before the race.  It was also nice to hear about the course, it made me less nervous about the hills.

I will certainly return the favor if you come to Houston.

Awesome performance, Dennis.  You can really fly!  171 avg. HR on the bike seems really high to me.  Is that normal for you?  Either way, you must have really been hammering.

Thanks so much for opening up your house to all us on Sunday.  It was a great party.

Thanks Dennis for the awesome hospitality on Sunday night.  It was great meeting everyone.  Next year buy the extra large container of garlic, and a few more loaves of bread.  I heard a few vampire bats died from the garlic everytime we went over the bridge.

Very impressive transitions.  Mine will never be fast when there's a long run involved.
