This is my supposedly bombproof cheap wheelset.  What you're seeing is damage to half of my brake track, gouged out when I hit a nice rut while I was trying to pay attention to traffic on my commute.

aaaahhhh dude. This is partly why I'm too scared to pay the money. I've got an OLD pair of HED stingers but they are tubular. I should just ridiing on them to get used to changing tubies....but I feel your pain.

Wow, yeah, likely that would have barely scratched if the rim were stainless steel...

And that would REALLY suck if it were a $1500 set of carbon rimmed racy's.

Now make that ding a week before your A race for the year.

That's why I ride mine the last three/four rides prior to the race and then tuck them back away after the race.

Amazingly, the spokes are fine, wheel is still true, tire didn't flat (despite the sidewall damage you see) and I didn't go over the bars.  So yeah, it could have been worse.

It's racing. Nothing is "bombproof".

Well there was this hangar in Homestead AFB they claimed was. When we were down there for Hurricane Andrew we saw it may very well have withstood a nuke but it got toasted by a hurricane.

Oh god i remember Hurricane Andrew when i was living in Florida. It tore 3/4 of Florida apart. That was the nastiest storm i have ever been through.

I usually just use my race wheels on race day since they are so pricy and use my training wheels for everyday rides.

well...I guess that proves it's not "rut proof"...as far as bomb proof...there is only one way to find out...

I hear you though...had my brake track bent after hitting a pothole on my training wheel.  Glad they weren't my race wheels.

Race wheels during a commute; noRace wheels during training; yes

Not really, only about 1/3, but it was the expensive 1/3.

^^^

As May reminds us here in the Midwest, even Indy race car teams are careful with their best gear in practice leading up to race day.

Ouch.  I commuted yesterday with the race wheels, fortunately made it with no issues.  I've also been training with them.

I've considered not doing it, but since I got the powertap, and it's on the carbon wheel, I'm kind of stuck if I want to have power on training rides, the back wheel has to be there.

My wheels are all-carbon, with non-metallic brake surfaces (Boyd carbon clinchers).  So I was thinking of throwing on a front wheel for training, that would have a metal brake surface.  So now I'd have a front wheel with much better braking capability than the back, which makes me nervous in a panic stop.  I've done enough endo's on my MTB to know that I don't need to experience that, especially on the road.

Has anyone tried a metal/front carbon/rear wheel combo for braking?

I've never taken off my race wheels. 4000+ miles. What a waste of money to just bring them out on race days.

Just depends on how good or bad your local roads are.

I do a lot of pre-dawn training rides and it's hard to see pot holes in the dark, even with lights.  I use a old pair of 32 spoke, box rim wheels, with 25mm kevlar belted tires.  I hit some holes, but much less flats.

It only takes a minute to switch wheels.  I ride my race wheels for many training rides, during daylight.

My way of mitigating the risk.
