Subject: Whats the latest on DMG-Dimethylglycine supplementation?

A local supplementation sales guy was pushing this product when I mentioned I was training for an Olympic Tri and he said many of the local college runners where using this.  I did a quick GOOGLE search and mostly positive information is out there on it but I couldnt find anything on this site when I seached. Anyone have personal experience with using it?  Word is it increases oxygenation in blood, reduces lactic acid buildup and increases endurance (don't they all say that?).  Anyway curious to what the experience folks on this board are saying about it. Thanks

"If a supplement works it's banned.  If it's not banned, it doesn't work."

And a question for the forum, why do the supplement questions always come from people with only a few posts?

Looks like it's nothing more than a derivative of the amino acid glycine and a type of B12 vitamin.  There's better things to take and if you want to try a B12 vitamin instead?

Not entirely true.  Beat Alanine as an example is a proven supplement that isn't banned.  BCAA's are another.  People really need to do homework however before putting just anything in their bodies though due to all the marketing hype.

Sorry I usually am a lurker but couldnt find anything when I searched.  Is this a banned substance? I don't know.  I didn't buy the DMG I just went in looking for a protein powder and Recoverite. wanted to research first.  Hopefully someone with first-hand experience will respond.

Wouldn't it be a fair assumption that the average athlete's blood oxygen saturation is already in the high 90s? What does dimethylglycine increase it to, 125%?

Hit up the sales guy for references to the supporting research. I can get just about any peer reviewed papers that have been published since the '80s. I'll send them to you, if they exist.

Because they (we) are too busy training. 1000+ posts doesn't make you faster.

If your O2 saturation Isn't in the high 90s(that goes for non-"athletes" also), you is in trouble..

This is an interesting question so I tried a search.  I have pretty good access to peer reviewed journals and I wasn't able to find anything in reputable medical journals, have you had any luck with a search?

Never listen to "supplement sales guys". They will push any product. All they do is make your pee more expensive. Just train and quit trying to find an easy way out.

Maybe not, but those 1000+ posts will make you faster than nearly every supplement being sold out there will.

The best research I could find after a cursory search seems to have been done by the Soviets on their athletes and cosmonauts. The supplement guy has its function totally wrong for sure. It has nothing to do with blood oxygen saturation. Apparently it can be made in our bodies from glycine (as mentioned in an earlier post), trimethylglycine, serine and probably other proteins. From what I can tell without going deeper, dimethylglycine has been shown to be involved in some fashion in oxygen utilization by mitochondria. However, supplementation only helped as much as dietary sources could, kind of like vitamin B shots only helping if you're deficient in B vitamins.

That stuff is old, I used to use it over 20 yrs ago on advice from my chiropractor. I never found any good literature on it so I stopped. Didn't notice any difference anyway.

Not for everyone, but for me- older- it's useful after exercise when taken with a liquid choline, to speed muscle recovery, oxygenation, and to help me focus ( Use for no more than 3 weeks on-3 weeks off) and use Ritalin for longer periods.
