So my husband and I will be moving to Columbus and specifically Westerville towards the end of July. Is Alum Creek the area to go to around here for OWS? How necessary are wetsuits in this area? Any other tips or recommendations for the area are welcome and appreciated.

Welcome to Ohio, albeit a bit prematurely.  Yes, Alum Creek is the place to go, especially if you will be living in Westerville.  As for wetsuits, it depends on your tolerance.  The water is in the mid-ish 60's right now, which is very comfortable in my opinion, but I still have a wetsuit.  Plus, you may eventually want to swim earlier or later in the season, so a wetsuit will be helpful.

As for other tips or recommendations, I'll try to think about some and add to this later.  But look up HFP Racing, Ultrafit and Greenswell.  They put on some really good local races.

Again, welcome!

Liiving in Westerville, Alum Creek is your best bet to practice OWS, as for the wetsuit, its hit or miss at the lake, some times its cold, sometimes its like bath water

Also, check out the Central Ohio Triathlon Team and Westerville Bike Club for groups to go out training with

Welcome to Ohio

Hit me up when you make the move. I live in S. Westerville(ish) and can show you some bike routes.

Thanks for all the info. One other question, we are looking to get a larger vehicle so that we can transport our bikes around easier. Is 4WD something that is helpful up there with the snow or is it easily done without? I'm coming from having only lived in the south so I'm at a lost here.

You won't need 4WD.

ETA:  I've had AWD or 4WD on my vehicles for years and can think of only a handful of times when I've used it.  Central Ohio seems to avoid the heavier accumulations of snow in the winter.  You may get 3 or 4 days per year where the driving conditions are tough.  Having said that, I'm sure this winter we'll set all kinds of records.

So I started looking for what would be my gym, and it looks like the Westerville Community Center is going to be my closest option. Anyone know anything good/bad about it or any other options for lap swimming in the Westerville area?

I think WAC is your closest option.

I live in Westerville. I live 10 minutes from Alum Creek and I am a member at the westerville community center.   The lap pool there is really great. I think you will really like it. Plus, it is very affordable for Westerville residents. Right now its roughly $19 a month for full access to the weight room, pool, basketball courts etc.   Alum is the best place for open water swimming when you live here.
