I'm registered for the sprint, but don't really know all that much about it.

I'm tempted to sign up.

I haven't done the race before, but I've ridden on many of the roads around there, and they're fairly good for cycling.

I'm doing the sprint, got a friend doing the int'l.  The MTS FB page said that the int'l distance race is the USAT Mid-Atlantic Club Championship race for this year, if that means anything to anyone.  Otherwise I haven't heard much about it.

I raced it last year---it was in June though not July...  I really enjoyed it---pretty small race (might be more "popular" this year due to being the club championship).  The swim was fine, longish run up a hill to transition, bike was good (nothing that stands out to me...), run course was nice---little trail section but it was solid ground.  I would do it again---I liked the June date for my race schedule but...  Oh and it's a Set Up race so organization wise it was just like any of their other races---well done.

I went out there today and rode the sprint route a couple of times. Mostly rollers with a few harder climbs. The roads were pretty quiet, with a decent amount of shade.

They just posted the water temp from a couple days ago - 86! A full 10 degrees warmer than last year.  Thanks to all this heat we've been having I guess.  I am now trying not to freak out about doing the swim without my wetsuit Frown  I've only done a few tris and all of them were wetsuit legal - this one was expected to be when I signed up, given previous years, but no one knew we'd have this crazy heat wave.  I'm doing the sprint so it is not a very long swim, but I'm still not too comfortable in open water yet (working on it!). I'm also concerned about the heat.  On Sat the forecast high is 104, with a heat index at 112!!  That is dangerously hot.  Sunday's supposed to be 97, with a heat index over 100.  Any chance they let us defer our registration to the October race at the same venue like they let people defer until next year at the Boston Marathon this spring?  The races are early in the day, but the overnight lows aren't much better than the daytime temps.

If you are really concerned about the heat, contact the race director and see if a deferral is possible. Otherwise, plan to hydrate well, starting Friday and continuing through to race time on Sunday. Make sure to drink well on the bike so that you'll be in good shape for the start of the run.

Wasn't last year's race in June? Between that and the warm temps I'm not at all surprised by the warm water. I was hoping for wetsuit legal because I'm quite a bit faster that way.

Did you see that they've revised the swim route a bit and moved the transition area closer to the water? I'm pleased by that!

Hopefully I can meet some of you BTers at the race.

See you there!

I'm actually kind of excited that it's no longer wetsuit legal. I like to swim without it more than with it; I feel too restricted with it on.

I agree with Nicole; hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Good luck!

As a heads up for anyone who was planning on doing the Sprint tomorrow, if you haven't heard by now, it's been cancelled. RD's original plan was to shorten the distance of all three legs and to start 30 minutes earlier than planned, and EMS was apparently on board with this idea. State of MD (along with Charles County) stepped in and say "no" because too many EMS were used during today's race.

What'd everything think about today's race? I only did the swim, as part of a relay, and was happy to be out of the 90 degree water (a teammate was pulled out of the water and the people on the boat said it was 90 deg, not the 87 from yesterday). That said... it felt like it was longer than 1500m.

Good job out there in the heat today!

I didn't know a damn thing until I was at the race site for packet pickup. Now we're out the cost of 3 hrs worth of gas and the cost of a hotel room. Not to mention that my brother came up from Florida to help out with my mom while I was racing. I haven't raced since Columbia in May and don't have another race scheduled until mid-August. This just totally sh!ts.

Sorry HillSlugger. It seems that the decision was made for MTS around 1:00. The RD made the announcement at the end of the awards, after he disappeared for a few minutes during the club championship awards. My guess is that he was told then.

A couple of my teammates went to talk with the RD and they said he wasn't happy about it, but there was nothing he could do since the state shut down the race. My understanding is they're offering entry into Watermans in October. Not sure of other options.

Also, I should mention that we had every ambulance in the county as well as about half from PG county at the race. At least 3 ambulances overheated and had to park with their hoods up from running so much. Volunteers were taken to the ER, along with racers. The state decided it was a safety issue to the population of the county since we were using so many resources today.

Yeah, I know it wasn't what he wanted to do.I really don't know now what I want to do. I hate to go two months full months without racing but don't know if I want to add a less preferred race just to have a race. Hell, I'm already out a chunk of $$ for this non-race.I'm waiting to hear back from the RD about all of my options. Part of me wants nothing more to do with this place/race. Ever.Sucks

Survived the race today. Understandably slow but I am wondering about the swim distance as my time was surprisingly slow. We're you being facetious?

No, not at all... From others that I've talked to who have the Garmin 910 and used it, they all measured at least 1.1 miles, not 1500m. That seems about right, given my swim times for a 1500, mile, and above. Several people said "that was more like a 70.3 swim, not an international swim", so you're not alone!

I did the International. The swim did not really seem that long to me (I seem to lose track of time in an OWS), but my time was WAY long, so it had to be longer. I was figuring almost 1.2. The sea grass was annoying. I can tell you that! I was very happy with that bike route. Very little traffic. The run was a disaster, and I probably walked 75% of the time. Otherwise I may have collapsed. Hardly any flats, all up and down, and a lot of time in the sun. I had to stop and fill up my water bottle at every stop. I wasted so much time. Glad I was able to finish though.
