Too late for your race, I guess, but....the key is the tri shorts. If they fit well, don't have seams in the wrong place and work for your anatomy and saddle, they should be fine for Oly distance and even further. If they don't, then maybe you need to try another pair. I have two pairs of shorts--Pearl Izumi and Zoot. The former is more comfortable for the swim (shorter, tighter), fine for running, but chafes on the bike at anything over a sprint. Horrible chafing for a very hot Oly last spring. Now I just use them for short rides on the stationary, swim/run bricks, or running.

Last weekend I wore the Zoots for a 58 mile ride and they were fine, just as comfortable as bike shorts. So I know what I'll be wearing in my HIM. It can't be a matter of natural padding--I'm scrawny (5'7" and 115-pound-ish) and get a sore butt just sitting at a long staff meeting in a chair, but I'm fine on my bike in my tri shorts. If in doubt, Body Glide, Chamois Butt'r or similar is your friend!

You'll be in the heat of battle, you won't notice what's going on with your butt area.  Leave the bike shorts at home.  Besides, if it starts to hurt, don't worry, you got 10k of stretching it out beyond that bike ride.

THIS!!  leave them home, you dont need them.

Edit.. just read the rest of the thread.. Glad you worked it out. Congrats.

Success!

Thanks for the advice to go without...it was not a problem whatsoever.  The bike ended up being my best leg...the run was ok , but I didn't "bring it."  The swim...well, I'll have an embarrassing story to tell the grandkids.

Grandkids?  What about us?  We deserve to hear the story
