Anyone else going to OWS this week? I've never been before and was wondering who else might be there.

I wish I could go, but traveling keeps me from heading out. It's so darn close to the house and I haven't been able to make it all of last year (and now so far this year.....). The water looked great out there today when I was out for a MTB ride ! Have a great time !

I have a conflict tonight, but I'll probably go out Thursday and swim/ride.

I much prefer going to Kill Creek on Mondays as they have a 500m course.  SMP is much shorter, and I've never figured out the distance.  I have heard secondhand stories about people measuring it at around 250 yards, but that's all hearsay.  It sure seems shorter than that to me.

Does the season pass work for the OWS in the evenings?

I'll have to check out Kill Creek. The course at SMP did seem short. I heard people saying it was around 250 per lap.

Do you just free swim out at SMP or do they have a course you swim?

they have a short 250 y loop set up. You just swim around the buoys.

At least at SMP you can work on rounding bouys and sighting.  Longer distance between turns would be nice.  I'm sure there's a reason (lifeguard coverage etc.) to keep it in the "beach" area and not out into the lake.  I know some folks that work in the parks & rec department I'll see what's the scoop etc.

Planning on it.  Brought my wetsuit, not sure if I'll use it.  It's looking more and more like KS 70.3 won't be wetsuit legal (Cry), so I'll probably try to go without it if I can stand it.

I will be there.  I did my first OWS at Kill Creek on Monday night (it was quick as I was very short on time) and I was surprised that it went swimmingly well.

Anyone know the actual distance around the buoys?  Lifeguards told me 300m, but that seems way long.  My guess was 200 yards.  Anyone tried a garmin in the swim cap for it?  Also distance from the beach to the first buoy?

Just trying to be more accurate in my workouts there.  I swam 10 laps around the buoys trying to get a HIM swim distance in and it felt long..... very long.

Thanks!

I swam it last year, seemed to be 250 yards ish.  The Garmin is a good idea though.

I plan to have my watch stuff in my cap tonight.  So if you see a fat guy with a lumpy cap, that's me.  I'm going to give it a try tonight and will post the results.

Awesome, I'll be out there as well.  I'd put my garmin in my cap but my head always comes out wet and my 305 isn't waterproof that I know of.

I have a 305 and use it all the time for OWS.  I believe it is waterproofed to about 5ft deep.  Just slip it in a plastic baggy and tuck it in your swim cap where a ponytail would go.  It works surprisingly well.  Except on tuesday I had 425ft of elevation gain...

Well that was a nice swim. I blv it was 250 around the buoys. did 1500 tonight and I relized if I swim the entire thing I can get it right under 10 min. which is 5 min faster than KC Tri. So I was happy.! I like there setup too.

I feel like an idiot for not thinking of throwing it in a ziplock under the swim cap...  I'll give that a shot on Tuesday if I am recovered from Kansas 70.3 by then
