Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Awoke at 1am and couldn't sleep, so I layed in bed awake until 4am, then had a cup of coffee and a granola bar.
Event warmup:

Swam about 50 meters to make sure I didn't feel panicky.
Swim
  • 16m 59s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt great during the swim. I had no panic issues, and was able to sight very well. I didn't exert much effort at all, and had to remind myself, many times, to keep my pace slow to prevent another panic attack. I got kicked, swam over, and elbowed quite a few times, but had no panic problems at all.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - my pace was very slow, and I wasn't tired at all when I came out of the water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Good transition for me. I had some problems getting my foot clipped in, but it didn't waste too much time.
What would you do differently?:

Work on mounting bike more efficiently.
Bike
  • 55m 32s
  • 14.7 miles
  • 15.88 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs burned from the moment I started riding until I got off the bike (and then through the run). I don't know if I am that poorly conditioned for hills, though I do ride them, or if something else was going on with me. It just seemed to be such a tough ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

I think I just need more time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I thought it was a good transition for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 26m 29s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, there was just something wrong with my legs today, then add in the hills. I typically do pretty well on the run, but I actually had to walk on a 5K today. I can run a whole half marathon and even a marathon without walking...but today I couldn't stop the burn in my legs without walking for a minute.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. I think my pre race and race nutrition was really lacking, but I'm still learning how to hydrate and refuel on the bike. I have a very difficult time with this.
Post race
Warm down:

I just walked briefly, then sat down for about an hour before the awards ceremony. My legs just hurt too much to do any cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The course, for one, and it was just one of those days where my legs just weren't working right.

Event comments:

I wouldn't say the course was 'just right' for my ability. It was a bit hard for me, but I don't think it was 'too hard'. It was really nice to be able to race in a novice group, since this was my second OWS, and I had a massive panic attack during the first. I was able to place 2nd, and more importantly, I was able to conquer the swim!!
