I'm in and coming from Alaska.
Would love to get some discussion going about the race.
The bike looks to be a killer.

Yup, I would say the bike course is the biggest question mark.  Looking at the profile it looks as thought the first 10 and last 10 are "flatter" but middle 36 is where the hills come into play.  It looks technical too and knowing Oregon it can get wet which would lead to slick roads on decents and switchbacks.  Has anyone ridden the course?  Any thoughts?

I know it's a new bike course for 2012 too. I'm hoping some locals may have ridden some or all of the course and can provide some insight. According for the elevation profile, there is that one hill that looks like it lasts for 5 or 6 miles.

I'm not local but I lived down that way a long time ago.  I can tell you that the flat part follows the Columbia river and will probably be windy.

The hilly section is probably fun if you live in the Pacific Northwest, difficult if you live in Flat-Landia.  Since the race is July, though, the chance of rain is pretty small.  I wouldn't worry about that too much.

ive ridden the course twice now. it is flat and fast for 12ish miles, then heads up. the climbs last until about mile 32ish.  there are three worth mentioning, none are 5-6 miles long, but they are steep.

also, the descents are pretty technical. they are fun, but watch yourself. there are several "10 mph" signs that really need to be respected.

last several miles by the river are flat, so you can get your legs ready for the run.  see garmin profile below, rode 44 miles, got 3300 elevationrev 3 profile

I'm coming from Massachusetts.  I'm flying in on the 29th so I'll have time to check out that bike course.  Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the recon/info guys!  Much appreciated.  My wife is from Corbett and a lot of her family lives there, so I am familiar with the terrain and that is why I am nervous!

Count me in.  Grew up in the Portland area and now live in southern Oregon.  From what I remember, good weather usually arrives after July 4th in the Portland area.  But don't hold me to that.

Wahoo! This is great. Thanks so much for the help. I am coming from hilly Alaska, so I'm not too concerned about the hills but it's always nice to get the local perspective. My biggest concern now is temperatures. It looks like it's been staying pretty mild in the Pac NW lately, but a lot can change in two weeks time.
How's everyone's training been going? Taper time yet?

I don't know about the water temp specifically, but I've heard it's a wetsuit legal swim.

Getting a bit nervous about the 80 degree forecast temps now. Ugh.

It has been 100-105 here in KC with heat index up around 110, so 80 degrees will be cold.

84 for the high sunday, but that has to be late afternoon.  I bet around 65-75 for most of the race.

Well duh, I never saw this thread before today. Oh well! Had a super-duper fun time racing the half yesterday. Well, I probably wasn't thinking "gee, this is fun!" on the hills and the hot run (Seattlite here, we don't see the sun until July 5)... but certainly it was fun when all was said and done. Huge props from the fam too -- they much preferred this small race to previous IMs. Hope everyone had a great and safe day!!!
