Subject: Bike help for a newbie?

So I'm new to BT.  Hi.

I'm in the market for a road bike.  I've done 3 sprints on my awesome bright green 1993 GT Cross Series and it's time to upgrade.  Based on what I'm riding now, I'm thinking anything would be an upgrade.  I'm budget conscious, especially as I'm still new to the sport overall.

Any advice on good entry level bikes?

Anyone looking to sell a used entry level bike?

I got measured at one of the local bike shops in AA, and they told me I need a 56" bike (I'm 6' 180lbs).

At this point, I don't know what I don't know, so any advice would be great!

Thanks!

Hi Skitz,

Check the Classifieds forum.  There are plenty of bikes being sold there.

Additionally, you may want to give an idea of your budget.  You can definitely find decent used road bikes (modified with aero bars) and maybe a low end tri bike under $1000 as you start looking around.  If you don't like what you see in the forums, go to a few of your local bike stores and ask them if they know of anyone selling a decent used tri/road bike and give them an indication of your price range.

Beyond that, since you are already doing the races and the "tri bug" has most likely bitten you, my advice would be to seriously consider what you can do for the bike.  I know a few people (myself included) who bought a bike to get through a summer of triathlons, and then turned around and sold that bike the next year in order to upgrade to a newer/better/more appropriate bike.  If you are already set on competing for a few years, I would urge you to figure out exactly what is best for you.  You may be better off going a bit beyond where you have set your budget than trying to sell your next bike within 12 months to upgrade.

No matter what you do, make sure it is a good fit for you.  You'll be spending a lot of time on it!!!

Good luck, let us know how it goes.
