Subject: Mpls Lifetime Tri - which bike?

I will be traveling to and spending a month in northern MN and have signed up for the Lifetime Fitness Tri in Mpls. I was planning on bring my tri bike to get in some training miles on the long, flat, empty roads of northern MN. However, after reading a few things about this race course I am questioning whether or not I should bring my road bike for this race instead. My road bike is a pretty basic Felt Z90 and my tri bike is a Cervelo P2.

Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.

Do you have a bumpy road to practice on? I did it on a road bike (no aero bars at the time) because that's what I had. If you are comfortable hanging on through the bumps, I'd go with the tri bike. Not too much climbing.

As far as I am concerned, there are VERY few courses where I would use a road bike instead of a tri bike. Lifetime is not that hilly, you would be fine to just pack the tri bike and log the miles on that

I would look into riding a mountain bike. The road conditions are terrible.

Not even a close decision... ride your P2.

The roads aren't half as bad as all the complaining would have you believe.

Bring your tri-bike. I ride a tri bike on that course 3 or 4 times a week. It's a little bumpy in parts, but not that bad

Thanks for all the feedback. After reading your advice, I will definitely be bringing my tri bike. Did a race last weekend on a freshly grated road that was being resurfaced....awful! But it would have been awful on any bike.

just a bit of advice.  watch out for the black patches that are about a foot wide and cross the entire road on Minnehaha trail.  they over filled the very large cracks, so a couple of them are almost like jumps, if your going fast enough.  Otherwise its standed poor to rough road.

For me, the fun is over for Life Time Tri.
Too many people. Cost too much. Crappy roads.

BTW, take the TT bike.

Thanks for the added advice regarding the roads - it's unfortunate that they are that bad for this race, but I am excited to do it as it is a "come full circle" moment for me.

4 years ago I was relatively inactive, going to the gym for 30 minutes 3 days a week was impressive at the time. I was visiting friends and walking around Lake Harriet when I thought "At 34 years old I should totally be able to run around this lake.

6 months later - 1st 5K (thank you Couch-to-5K)

a year after that - 1st 8K

5 more months - a 1/2 marathon

Last year - 6 sprint tris

And in 5 days, my first Half Iron!

So this race is a moment for me - back to where the inspiration began.

Hope to enjoy the race as best I can in spite of the roads.

Thanks again for all the advice and I will be bringing my tri bike.

Congrats! I had a similar journey, though I waiting until my forties. Lost about 9 inches off my waste since 2009. Triathlon has been good to me. Have fun at the race!
