Total Time = 2h 22m 50s
Overall Rank = 575/578
Age Group = Clydsdale
Age Group Rank = 28/28
Pre-race routine:

This has been a long time coming for me. In 3 months I have quit smoking, become sober from alcohol, lost 30lbs, and have become a better person all around.

My alarm went up at 4:30am. I was able to eat half an english muffin with peanut butter, then was out the door. I made the drive to West Lake park and got my transition set up. I met a fellow BT member. It rained for about an hour before the race. "It's about to go down"
Event warmup:

Not a lot, I did some light streching, walked around in the rain, talked to my family that was there, then made the walk to the swim start.
Swim
  • 24m 6s
  • 656 yards
  • 03m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was tough. I wasn't nearly ready for the swim as I thought I was. I spent a lot of time doing the breast stroke. There was one time where I thought I wasn't going to make it, but I just kept pushing through and was finally out of the water. That was an amazing feeling.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on my swimming, a lot. I have plans to take more swimming lessons in the next few weeks
Transition 1
  • 06m
Comments:

Was happy here, took the time to really settle down from the terrible swim
What would you do differently?:

Work faster. I was pretty frustrated with my swim, and that really slowed things down a lot
Bike
  • 1h 04m 24s
  • 15 miles
  • 13.98 mile/hr
Comments:

It was a good ride, it rained a bit from mile 8-12. I passed a few people on the bike, that felt great. I can't really complain about my bike ride at all
What would you do differently?:

I need a road bike. My Trek 7.2fx is not made for Triathlons. I am working too hard to maintain a decent speed. Overall I am happy with it though.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Good time here, legs felt great
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 46m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I was tired and ready to be done. I don't feel that I pushed myself as hard as I should have on the run. I got passed by 2 people, but never did any passing. Lots of walking untilt he final mile, pretty much ran the whole last mile
What would you do differently?:

Train harder on my run, my run training seemed to get neglected
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to family, ate, drank.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training/Weight

Event comments:

It was a great day. This was my first triathlon, and I am very happy with my performance. I never really believed anyone when they told me that this would become an addiction, but now I do. I have already signed up for my next one in 6 weeks. I look forward to training harder/smarter for that one.

Great job, especially if you're doing this on something other than road (or tri) bike.   Keep it up!

Congrats on finishing your first race!  You failed to mention just how nasty the weather was!  Nothing like a good downpour going into the swim at your first triathlon.  It'll be good race experience like this that will help you in your next race!

Tyler - congratulations on completing the race and I'm SO sorry I wasn't at the line to see you finish.  My brother in law came across and was hurting pretty bad so I was helping him out with food and water and that and just missed you.  Great meeting you beforehand though, and make sure and go get 'em in 6 weeks!

Great job, Tyler.  I too breast stroked most of my first tri swim.  It is great that you were able to push through and finish!  Keep up the work/lessons, the next one will be easier.  Congratulations, triathlete!

Well done man.  And nice to meet you after too.  Oh, and that was me that yelled out your name on the bike course.  Forgot to mention that when we were talking after the race.

Good job triathlete.

Thanks man, sorry we didn't get to talk much after.  I was with family, and still a little out of it.

Hope to see ya next year, if not sooner!

Awesome job, Tyler!!!  So impressed you dealt with rain on the bike portion and handled it just fine.  Under those conditions you should be happy for your Trek instead of a road bike!   But seriously, a huge congratulations on getting so many aspects of your life and health in line and under control.  Best wishes in keeping on the path you are on!

Very nice job.  I did my first tri season on a fx7.2 also.  You are right its not the best bike but hey it will get you through the race.  Very good job.

See you not only did not finish last but you crushed my first triathlon finishing time.  You are the man.
