I guess we should start a thread.  I just signed up since I missed getting my first 70.3 at Boise when they cut the bike from 56 to 15.  My fingers are crossed I can get the full distance in on this one.

I'm signed up...trying to get a Kona validation.  If I can pull it off this weekend at BSLT I will probably skip Steelhead.  But, I doubt I'll manage this weekend so I'm probably coming to Steelhead.  I too hope for the full thing. :D

I don't have any travel arrangements or anything...waiting to see how this weekend goes.

Well, I'm out.  Sorry.

I managed to validate my lottery spot at Buffalo Springs Lake this past weekend, so I no longer need to do this race.  Normally I'd still want to, but I would rather put the money towards Kona.

I sent in my request for the partial refund today.

Good luck to you all!

Great to see some folks actually coming to the race.  I'm doing pretty good, but scattered in my training.  My plan had been to take the summer off after Boise 70.3, but since that didn't happen (mother natures fault) it been tough to get back on a consistent training plan.  I don't have lofty goals so finishing under six hours seems resonable.  Good luck in training to everyone and I hope this hot weather lets up soon.

Chris, under 6 hours is NOT lofty?? I'm hoping for 7:20-7:30! So feel good about your "scattered" training lol

Is anyone really familiar with Benton Harbor/St Joseph? My husband and our kids are coming with me and we'll be staying at a hotel that I think is only about 3-4 miles from transition... I'd like to be able to leave the car with them so they can come and go as they (read: as the kids) need to throughout the day, so I'd like to take a taxi to the park on race morning.. somebody mentioned there is only one cab company in entire St Joseph... is that true? Should I just make alternate plans?

I have heard this a bad race for transport.  Sadly I don't have a clue about any of it yet.  I do hear the beach is a great place for kids to play during the race.  Good luck and keep us posted if you find out any good information.

I'm just hoping it doesn't turn into a duathlon like last year....That would be a bummer

Has this race been wetsuit legal in the past?

I am interested in what everyone has to say about the course. I just did Muncie and it was shortened due to heat. They are giving everyone a discount on one of four races. Steelhead is one of them. I am considering it. Does anyone know of any campgrounds in the area?

South Haven state park is closest to the north.  Warren Dunes state park is about 25 miles to the south.  Weko beach in Bridgman is a smaller camp ground in Bridgman.

I believe this swim is usually wet suit legal.  It's in lake Michigan so it's quite a bit cooler than the local lakes, but who knows with theses hot temps.

Thanks for the update.  That temp sounds good considering I've been swimming in lakes in the high 70s low 80s.

I was looking at a coastal map that showed the surface temps of the water near St. Joseph and it was showing high 70's to mid 80's. I could have bee reading it wrong though. Seems awfully high for Lake Michigan.

wow, that does sound high! I have never done Steelhead, does anyone know what it's normally around race time? I would imagine that if they cancel swim because of chop, the tides and winds also make the water chilly? who knows, though...

Theresa, right now here (Illinois) lakes are like bath water, too! Of course, the lake I'm training in (500 yards across) is small, but easily over 80.  Still able to swim in the full wetsuit, but only because of practicing for race day, certainly not for comfort..

Btw, Theresa, your racing schedule looks uber impressive!  You are going to be one tired lady at the end of that list!

I rode the bike course this morning and here are a few observations.

Somewhere between 8-10 miles on M-63 there is a huge hole that is not marked and not filled in yet.  It's about the size of a dinner plate and deep, if you hit it you'll lose a tire and maybe damage a wheel.  It's near the bottom of some of the rolling hills but you can see it well in advance if you watch.

About 5 miles of CR 376 has been recently chip/sealed and it's bumpy!  After the chip/seal the remainder of 376 is pretty bumpy but the good news is that's the worst section of the course.  There are a couple more sections of chip/seal but its much more managable.

The rest of the back roads are bumpy in spots but otherwise okay.

It's a good idea to check your speed when crossing over M-140 (2X), it's been pretty bumpy in years past and that's been a collection point for water bottles and other equipment that falls an unlucky person's bike.

Save a little for the last 18 when you make your turn south on Blue Star, some of those hills can be a pain.

Good luck to everyone.

Hi all! I pulled the trigger on this event as soon as it became available; it was supposed to be "The" event of the year for me, the crowning jewel of my second year of multi-sport, with everything else just training for it. Unfortunately I did something to myself, over training maybe, early in the year and it has come down to "The only" event. Last year's "Event" for me was an Olympic distance event so there is no way I'll be prepared for this; all I've done this year is PT and watch my scheduled events go by without me being able to participate.

I miss participating very much. I have never considered myself a 'triathlete' like most of you are but this year now that it's all been taken away I realize that what I had accomplished was special enough. The past few months I've envied the joggers and bikers I see; I have never been hurt like this before but I am getting closer to normal, very close. I plan on being there come 19 August and I'm making plans for the day. I ordered some aerobars for my bike as well as a hydration system. Purchased swim goggles to replace the ones I lost. Now I'm writing this, a mental task: Queme los Barcos! Good luck everyone!
