Total rookie to the Tri-world.  Experienced runner looking for a new challenge and variety to workouts.  Signed up for a Olympic and need a bike.  Have spent a bunch of time researching and testing and have narrowed it down to these two.  Both seem to get comparable reviews and I've noticed very little difference on test rides.  Won't go really long on rides, 50m max for now but also want to be able to grow with it.  Anyone have something to add to help the decision?

I ride a 2012 Madone 4.5 and have put about 200 miles on it and I love it...so far.  It's fast, comfortable and does what it needs to. This bike is my upgrade from my Scott S60 that i put 3k miles on so it is a HUGE step up in quality of components and going to full carbon is awesome. Love the bike so far but I've only had it a few weeks.

Yes, really looking forward to full carbon, thanks for the input.  Will prob do one more ride and go with best fit.  Seems like the best route.

Those are both very nice bikes.  If you are looking to get into triathlon, however, you may be looking at tri bikes in the near future.  So the question I'd ask is are you willing to spend that much on 2 bikes in a relatively short time frame?   If so, either will be great.  If not, you can get a more-than-adequate road bike for half the price (or less) of those bikes to get yourself started (there's no need to get too hung up on carbon at this stage, either).  Then add a nice tri bike down the road if you've decided to stick with the sport.

I have a 2011 R3 Rival. I found it more responsive in general than the Trek, and it climbs like a mountain goat. A little over a year later I am as happy with the bike as the day it came home. That being said, it fit me better than any of the other bikes I tested in that price range. Eta: IMO if you're not planning rides over 50 miles you're really not going to see the full benefits of either bike.
