I'm not convinced that being overweight is all that bad for a person, that BMI is a correct indicator over a large and diverse population, or that this problem wasn't in part caused by women joining the workforce.

Excellent!

Over weight by a "few" pounds; probably not.    Over weight to the point of obesity; yes, it's medically proven.  Over weight to the point of morbidly obese;  well, look up the word morbid.

Obviously, by overweight, I meant the federal government's defintion of overweight using the BMI (Overweight = 25–29.9).  I'm not convinced that this is all that bad given the studies that show health and longevity at that range.

I am 43 and grew up in a very disruptive home. I was a latchkey kid from 6 years old. I know this is the case for a lot of kids today. The big difference? TV. When I was a kid there was kid programming until 4 in the afternoon then nothing interesting for kids. Now kids TV is on 24/7. Why is there kid TV on t 10pm? My point is although I feel I watched too much TV it didn't compare to what most kids watch today. When kids programming ended we all went outside to climb trees and ride our bikes. Now parents are too paranoid to let their kids play outside so they stay inside playing video games and watching TV. Parents don't say no and let their kids eat whatever they want.

The "corn issue" is real, if you believe the HBO special (which I do)- I dont have the exact figures, but corn and soybeans have become so profitable for farmers (to a large extent due to Govmt subsidies), that only a small percentage of the US farmland is used for other vegetables - something like 10% I think.  So "real" vegetables, which are much more healthy,  are in shorter supply and cost much more.  That lower cost ofcorn/soy leads to lower food costs for foods that use the corn - soda, fatty beef, sweet foods (i.e. twinkies, etc.), and other non-healthy foods.

One major directive is to try and buy local from local farms - food is fresher which typically tastes better and encourages (hopefully) better eating habits.

For the record, I was a high school athlete, ballooned to 225 lbs as an adult and yo-yo'd - bad diet more than bad exercise.  4 years ago, I made a commitment and am now 165-175 lbs (depending on Tri season).  I eat better and exercise regularly, but I still have my food demons that get the best of me.  It takes full time effort and positive thinking EVERY TIME I eat for me to stay on the right path.  It is very difficult - and makes me very nervous for the future of our country.
