you could get a little crafty and just buy a white tri suit and a black sharpie.  That should work.

In some events, qualification for worlds is quite competitive. E.g., M40-44 triathlon: large pool of strong competitors, and with the funds to pay their way to worlds. But there are others where it's probably not so hard to qualify, due to smaller fields, age-groups with less disposable income, etc. So, for example, at the recent Long Course Duathlon Nationals there were only 2 AGs where there were more competitors than worlds qualifying slots. So if you have the funds to take yourself to the championships in Zofingen, Switzerland, then you're golden.

That's about right for M40-44 and similarly matched age groups (course-dependent, as always).
