A friend and I are both doing the sprint course (looks to be pretty much the same, except the Olympic course does an extra loop of everything).  I'll be curious how awful it is to swim in the harbor....no surf to contend with, but probably oil/gas and other junk in the stagnant water.

I did the race last year.  Had a great time.  I remember the swim being pretty good except for some sea weed I had to crawl through on the way out and the wake of a few boats as they were entering or exeiting the harbor.  There were lots of life guards out to keep you on course.  I wish I was racing again this year.  I have been out there the last three years but camping at the Grand Canyon with the family got priority.  Have a great day all that are out there. I will be thinking of you.

Yes, inside the harbor.  Water quality was fine as far as I could tell.

I'll be doing the oly.  My goal will be to beat Chrism.  I've checked out the swim area and the water looks great.  A little current comes into the harbor, so we have to swim against that.  Chris, how is the 2 loop swim?  I've never done one of those.  Do you get a chance to gain some speed by running in the shallower water?

LOL, always good to have a goal!

2 loop swim is...  interesting.  Re: running in the shallow water, be careful, I (and a few others from reading race reports) were quite surprised at how much energy it takes to sprint out of then back into the water at Oly pace.  It works fine up until the time you start swimming again and you suddenly realize how shattered you just got and you can't catch your breath

Also hard because the sprint wave will inevitably start when you come over the timing mat, so you have TWO rounds of fighting your way through crowded water.

Also, I thought my navigation would be spot on the second loop, after all I already did one right?   Not so much......

Good luck all, see ya in the a.m.  Look me up if you can

I did the race last year and loved it. Small field, fast course, good crowd support. I remember the water being a little choppy/ rough and the bike course having some good sized potholes. Good luck to all. Should be a blast!

Good Race and a new experience for me in the swim leg to have a loop course and 5 mins waves coming through like that . The course was sheltered from the ocean with warm and cold pockets of water , there was a very gently slopped entry and zero surf zone to deal with . I Picked to go left of the pack on the way to the first buoy but that path had me swim into the kelp on my way to the first buoy which helped kick my HR up . The bike and run course were flat and there was little wind . Good to set a good tempo and hang on for the distance . During the run i was glad the wind started to pick up and it helped me finish the run. Nice of Renegade to have a yummy BBQ at the finish area .

Great race!  The kelp bed to the left of the first buoy was pretty bad.  Turned the first buoy and was instantly blinded by the sun.  Had a small panic attack that lasted about 30 seconds then settled in to the swim.  Conditions (besides the kelp) were perfect!

Chrism:  Bitchen swim!  I was shooting for around 24 to 25 min, but ended up around 27.  Maybe I'll get you next year in Santa Barbara!

Thanks...   And congrats to you, 27 is solid, especially on a two loop course.  Looks like they got the course right this year, last year was way short!  I have a tendency to swim left, so yeah, I hit the kelp on the first leg too.  Figured too late I shoulda used it to help my propulsion by pulling myself along
