Emma Otto-Moudry, 17 from Ithaca, New York broke Evan Morrison's 17.5 mile swim record from Sandy Hook NJ to Manhattan in a time of 4:38.38. The previous record was 5:24:52.

Emma finished in the top 5 in the recent Manhattan Island marathon swim (28.5 miles in 7:52:08), and finished second in another distance event called the Ederle swim last fall. (17.5 miles in 5:36:04)

Wow.

She just about swims faster than I run.

Okay, not really, but uncomfortably close on a bad day.

I'd really love to see some video of her swimming. Still looking, but can't find any.

OK- just calculated it.  that's 54 seconds per 100yd pace.  I presume there was a bit of a helping current?  Or can a human being sustain that pace in the water?

Sure, I can swim for 2-3 miles... but it never occured to me to go out for a 4-6 hour swim like I would on a bike. That's incredible.

Any record involving the outdoors and long endurance events will always have favorable conditions helping. I'm sure the last record holder had favorable currents too.... but ya, she didn't beat the record, she demolished it. That will probably stand for a while.

Sure, she had a friendly current. The girl is still insanely fast. Look at her other swims and where she comes in relative to the pack. And by that I mean men and women.

The winner of the 10K I did last year (male) averaged 1:12/100 METERS for that distance. The year prior the 5K winner (female) averaged the same. It was an out-back-forth-back-forth-in course, so the currents pretty much evened out.

USADA would get her on doping allegations before we'd find out

heck yeah!  I didn't mean to diss her in any way.  I'm suitably impressed and in awe.
