overseas carbon fiber wheelset ?

Regular  143   Maynard, MA |  Subject: overseas carbon fiber wheelset ?Has any one had any luck with ordering / using carbon fiber wheelset from China? There have been a few time that I have read people recommending them, or suggesting them over "name brand" labels, but how to they stack up? There does seem to be a huge cost advantage $500 vs. $1500 for very similar product. And I think most of carbon fiber products come from China any ways. The only thing I can think of is if you have a warranty clam it could be hard to get a replacement. |

I've read people having great success with the Chinese wheels, I've also read some horror stories. Roadbikereview has a ton of threads on the subject. |

A set of deep carbon wheels costs about $600 with shipping. I had great customer service when I got mine- very friendly guys and the put up with my stupid questions. I havent had any issues with the wheels so I can't talk to the warranty, but the good news is that I have had no issues with the wheels! And when I did have questions, they were quick to respond. |

I can't speak to reliability or how the 1 yr warranty will be honored if needed, but i just got a set. 60/88 combo at my door in less than 2 weeks for $485 (tubulars) and they look fantastic. Looking forward to putting some miles on 'em. |

Thee are a lot of Asian and east-Asian import carbon rims and are mostly quite good to very, very good. domestic production carbon rims are actually less plentiful and generally sold under brand names we recognize like Zipp, HED, Enve, etc. The Asian no-brand e-Bay stuff can be pretty good, but it is caveat emptor, "let the buyer beware". And remember, on more expensive wheel brands a part of what you pay for up front is some degree of back-end warranty service if something goes wrong. That said, a crash or a chuckhole strike is not a warranty no matter whose wheels you are on. |

I bought mine a about a year ago and have had no problems whatsoever...They had a 30-day "warranty" so I took them into a LBS to have them inspected before I put them on and they passed with flying colors. I've put thousands of miles on them and they seem just fine. I love that they're plain, no decals, matte carbon...And at $565 (with shipping) I'll more than likely look into buying another set when the time arises... Edited by JasenGuy 2012-07-09 6:40 PM |

Of course at $500 you could order 2 sets incase anything happens to the first Agree with above. BTW I believe they get their rims from Taiwan (gigantex). Taiwan is a generation ahead of china in terms of carbon fiber technology. I think getting (mainland) Chinese carbon fiber wheels is a little more risky at this time. |
