I am looking at where I can make the biggest gains. And what I've done is taken an approx world or Olympic gold standard and subtracted that from my time to see how much I "could" gain. So using 15 min for the swim, 50 min bike, 30 min run, I find that I am off by 15 min in the swim, 20 min in the bike, and 17 min in the run. If I assume 5 min for aero bike gear, then it makes the most sense for me to focus on my run. Does this strategy make sense?

Do you have a planned race coming up?

If so, you can usually find the results of the last several years on the race web site and look at the times for your age group. This can helpful to see where the top triathletes are in all three.

Agreed you won't get 5 minutes in 40k just by adding "aero bike gear". I don't think the gold standard is meant for most people to gauge there times off. I don't know many people that can run a 30 min 10k without swimming and biking first.

2:27 (the time you're saying you put up) isn't a bad time
