Okay, I had a relationship that went sour this last fall/winter. It was GREAT motivation to work things out on the treadmill/swimming etc. Perfect excuse to pound away seven or so miles on the treadmill. It's hard to dwell on things in the middle of the night (feel sorry for myself) when I was dog tired! So as time passes and the sun starts to shine again, how does one stay motivated? I will admit exercising is still great therapy. Okay I'm done venting!

Great thread and great question. It is so true that what motivates us fades over time and we need to find a new motivation. The answer, unfortunately, is that you must find it for yourself as it's all relative to the individual. For me, I find that my motivation changes daily. One day I want to shed a few extra pounds so I run a little further. The next day, I train just to escape from the hectic day to day routine.

Remember to take a few minutes each day to just sit quietly and meditate. It can often produce as much for you as your best 2 hour workout.

That's not a vent...more like a wonderful revelation. Congrats on taking a bad situation and making something very positive of it. You rock!

There's a benefit for using exercise as therapy. When the sun fully comes out I will be one step closer to having the body for a swim suit.

Do some races- that will keep you motivated because you'll always want to do better and want a bigger challenge

That's what I do -- once I finish an event I start looking toward the next one. Whether it's a 5K or a 10K or a triathlon or a duathlon it keeps me moving because I KNOW if I stop I won't do well in the next event.

Oh and I look at the clothes I wore two and a half years ago and don't EVER want to fit into those again.

I'm toying with the idea of running a two mile race this Saturday. I will keep you posted.

run outside more, then you'll be VERY motivated to never set foot on that dreadmill again.

but yea, racing always makes me want to train more.

Things that I use to keep myself motivated:

1. Races of all sorts -- swims, 5Ks, fun runs, anything.
2. I think of all the hard work I've put in so far, how great I feel and how it would be a complete shame to waste all of that
3. Training buddies and/or join a Tri Club. They are great motivators and emotional butt kickers.
4. Rewards -- get in 2 swims, 2 bikes and 2 runs and I can buy/eat/drink/etc. what I please for a short period of time.
5. Volunteer at local events and see up close how great this lifestyle really is!

Oh and run that race Sunday and post a report!!!
