So I made the plunge and purchased a set of Reynolds Strike wheels (66mm). Now as I say in pretty much every post I'm no little guy, but what should I expect in a time gained by these wheels over 40k. Besides the obvious looks they'll get Tongue out? My last tri I averaged 19.4 mph on the same course.

so about a minute-minute and a half. should break 20 mph assuming similar conditions

Best guess based on the data I've seen on those wheels - .5s to 1s per km.

So 20-40s over 40km.

I'd be shocked if they got you more than a minute.

Is it the wheel or my size that leads to low expectations? Assuming these are low expectations

Neither, it's reality. Okay, I'm saying this as a 230 pound guy with HED 90/60 setup.

Wheels are really sweet and make you feel great but they're about 5-10 minutes in an ironman for Joe Sixpack and maybe 3-5 minutes for a 40K. If not exactly those then somewhere in that neighbourhood.

Aerohelmet is the best bang for your buck, something like twice the time savings as wheels. Looks dorky but you're wearing spandex in public anyway

(edit) Oh, those numbers of mine aren't for the wheels alone, they add on a bit because you'll feel faster and you'll push harder because of them.

Thanks that's more the response I was hoping to hear. I figured, at my weight, I wasn't getting much out of the wheels other than the look and sound. I'll have to consider the aero helmet and agree with the wearing spandex could I look and weirder mentality but I'd feel like a bigger dork going slow in those helmets. Safe to assume the LBS pushes upgrading the wheels so much because of the markup/revenue to them then?

your body is most of the drag experienced on a bike. correct bike fit can make a huge difference, then aero helmets, then wheels, then body suits, then shoe covers, then bits and pieces on the bike.

good write up, there are many others.

What wheels are you coming from?if they were already semi aero, even less to be gained.

I'd say a minute or so.

I think the aero advantage in a race comes with the cumulative effect of helmet, wheels, tight fitting tri top, less water bottles all over your frame, and commitment to stay in aero as close to 100% of the time as possible.

A lot of the speed benefit we see in races (on courses with similar elevation as we train) also comes from the fact that we aren't stopping at stop signs etc.

My last race was the first time I raced with aero wheels (borrowed some HED 60's.)  I saw a very significant increase in speed, but a lot of that was due to the course being very fast.

Get a disc cover for your bike (I have one for my Reynolds) and it will definitely be a game changer.

About 45 sec. for the front wheel and 30 for the rear over 40k.

You should also be about 38grams lighter....the weight of 12 $100 bills.

If you really want to have potentially major impact on speed, get a bike fit. The rider does account for the vast majority of the drag, so that's where you should start.

Wheels will help, but to the tune of 1-3 sec per km, so you'll see a small improvement. Where you may see an improvement is on a technical or hilly course. In a technical course, wheel stiffness and rotating weight comes into play (stiffness thru the corner and acceleration, lower rotating weight is easier to get up to speed after the corner). Hilly course, stiffness and rotating weight, stiffer wheels tend to climb better (less energy lost in side-to-side movement).

Yeah I had a fit when I bought my bike (1.5 months ago) Will be going back next week to get refit as I've lost a few lbs and gotten more comfortable being aero. Atleast the wheels make my bike look good haha. Also plan on getting an aerojacket. Did a quick 8 miles this morning and was surprised at just how much you can feel the wind

Notice I understand the bars need to be cut/wires cleaned up. Also need to drop the risers on my rests I think. Was waiting for my second fitting.

shaved 10 minutes off my OLY time. Official times aren't posted yet but cateye had me holding 21+ on the bike and I made up a couple minutes on the run. Couldn't be happier with the wheels

That is impressive, would guess most of it was fitness and/or race conditions if you have been consistently training.  Anyway, great job!

yeah my fitness has gotten much better but for now I'm giving most the credit to the wheels haha. Race conditions were near identical. OWS was a little smoother but bike/run on same course same wind conditions
