Hey BT'ers! Doing this one for the second time, I live four hours away from the venue and you just can't beat that! Plus it is a great location too.

Let me know what you find, and what rate. I'm reading last years thread and it seams that Conroe is an easy commute with less expense.

This is my first Ironman, so very excited about it. We have been having high humidity/heat up here in Minnesota, but in April/May, that is lacking. So I was going to try and arrive 4-5 days before the IM to try and acclimate. Otherwise, I've read folks who dress up and run/cycle inside with no fan a few weeks before the event.

I've been looking into Conroe as well after doing online searches of the hotels from the entire metro area. I decided on http://www.baymontinns.com/ in Conroe. I got the room for $68 (discounts for reserving early and staying for 4 nights) a night. It has a fridge and a microwave in each room and a free breakfast. It got an avg. of 4 based on 43 reviews on Trip Advisor which is pretty good. The price is outstanding.

Happy Training.

Conroe is a little ways up I-45 from the Woodlands and that stretch of road has been a construction nightmare lately.  Look at hotels in Shenandoah, I got one there for IMTX this year and it was $79/night and about a 5 minute drive from the start/convention center/etc.

I'm in.  This will be my first Ironman!!  Can't wait.  It's not a far trip for us from Austin!  I'm training for a half at the end of September right now.  Got off the bike after a 66 mile ride this morning, did a 30min tranisition jog, and my only thought was....so I've got to go another 56miles on the bike and then another 22ish after this....good lord what have I gotten myself into!

I'm in for my first.  Easy commute since it's almost our back yard (30 miles).  Did my first century yesterday.

I've got a long way to go before May.

It's on!

I'm also keeping a blog about training for IMTX (see link below)....read and/or follow along. We're all in this together.

Guess I'll join the official race thread ... I am in .. IMTX #3 (why break the streak now)

I stayed at the Residence Inn  Market St the first year ... great hotel, with a small kitchenette, plus free breakfast and walking distance to everything. This past year we stayed at the host hotel and really liked it so will be doing that again this year.

Training kicks off 1/1/13!

First IM for me. Swim coach by trade novice runner with 2 marathons under my belt and am ready for the challenge (I think) ... Have some overpriced rooms at the spring hill suites, but am open to some local knowledge / recommendations.

This is a good location and you are not in any harm of the construction which is north a few miles. The hotel has a Kroger a block away and is in the same parking lot of IHOP. You will be only 4 exits north of the race site. I did the race the last 2 years and I also live locally so if any of you have questions please ask.

I am in also.  My first IM.  I actually live in The Woodlands, so it is too hard to pass up.  I have volunteered the first two years and was inspired by all of those amazing athletes.

I am an ultrarunner that has learned to swim in the last year.  Slowly learning to bike too!  Looking forward to gleaning all the information I can to help me cross that finish line!

How is everyone's training going? What plan are you going to use? I've been thinking about Don Fink's Competitive plan.

I'm going to use a coach.  Most likely the one I have now although several options are out there locally here in town.  Not going to worry about it until after Oilman though.

Planning on a December marathon, with a little more cross training than usual, before kicking it into full gear.

Bump, Just keeping the group on the first page of Race Group Forums. 2nd) Hope everyone is doing well.

Also, not too early to start talking about a course ride/run weekend. Obviously can't schedule now, but I would like to try the course out sometime in March.

Take care y'all, Tom

Thinking about signing up for this race... it will be my second (I just completed IMKY). I would love some redemption after battling IT band issues this summer and during this past race and am resting up now to train for another race. Hopefully it won't fill up before I decide!

Plan to do my first Ironman in 2013 after 3 years of tri. I have done 3 70.3 all in Austin as well as numerous oly's. I am 53, 6'4 225. I have trouble with heat. Usually finish in mid pack. My question, is this a good one to do as a first,or should I do Florida or Az. Or any other. I do live in Texas about 5 hrs from the race. Thanks

For a Texas resident, the thing that makes this such an attractive race is that the bulk of your high volume training will be done in the cooler weather. Most of the big volume weeks will be in Feb - April, before it gets too hot.

No doubt that race day could be a scorcher, but normal highs for The Woodlands in that part of May are upper 80's. Personally, I think time of year for your big training months should play a large role in IM race selection decisions.

re:heat, etc. Ya, it's going to be hot/warm...but I also like the idea of training in a little cooler weather. I'm in Florida and despite liking the heat, I'm a huge sweater and my performance does take a hit. That's part of the challenge for me, to work through it.

re: Florida or AZ, again I live near PCB and the temps are usually ideal in Nov., a tad windy, but no big deal. I spectated at AZ a cupl years ago and despite a hail storm, it looked great. Temps were nice. Both races sell out quick, so you can't be on the fence about signing up. Another option for you would be IM CDA. Temps are usually nice, except the cold water. That actually put me off a bit and is why I selected TX.
