Subject: NYC Training Partner or Coach

I'm looking to find a triathlon training partner or coach here in NYC. I'm new to tris, and am looking to train specifically for sprint and olympic distance.

I'm a 28 y/o male with about 3 years of running/racing under my belt (5k to marathon). I live in the UES, and bike/run daily in Central Park around 5:45-6am on the weekdays (little later on the weekends). I typically swim at NYSC on 91st Street. I'm very dedicated and love to push myself out of my comfort zone. I've made some good progress on my own, but I want to continue to develop and compete on the next level - hopefully someone out there shares the same competitive spirit and we can give each other that extra edge.

Performance-wise, here's where I am today..

  • Running: 5k pace workouts are around 6:00/mile, tempo around 6:30-6:45, and long/easy runs 7:30-8:00.
  • Bike: Just invested in a tri bike, 1st training ride was done just yesterday. Consisted of 2 easy laps around CP loop in 38:00. I expect this to come down as I get more comfortable on the bike and start to push the pace
  • Swim: I've been swimming 1-2 times a week for about 6 weeks. I've read up thoroughly on proper mechanics and drag reduction. I've spent the past few weeks emulating what I've read and trying to get comfortable in the water (also trying not to drown).

Anyway, I'd love to partner up for speed workouts (bike or run). And since I'm just starting out in the water, I'll most likely go the coaching route, unless of course someone would be willing to subject themselves to critiquing a newbie.

And as far as coaches go - does anyone have any recommendations or experience with anyone here in the city (tri or swim-specific)?

Hey what time do you normally go the NYSC?  I was going to go for the first time later tonight/early tomorrow pending what time i get out of work and wanted to know what the crowd is like.

I try to get there when it opens at 5:30am. From 5:30-6:30, there are usually only a few others there, so it's a great place to practice drills and swim comfortably.

I've tried swimming later in the day after work, but it's typically pretty crowded. Unfortunately they only have 4 lanes, so it doesn't take much to fill up. They also close the pool for classes at 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and often times they close off two lanes for children.

I gave the John Jay pool a shot a couple weeks ago - it's an outdoor pool on 78th and the river. It's much larger (~48 yards) and they break it off into 3 large lanes for lap swimming (slow, moderate, fast) starting at 7pm on weeknights. Best of all, it's free! I'd definitely recommend it as an alternative during the warmer months.
